Summer meals for kids and teens help make sure that summer vacation doesn't mean missed meals for kids when they are most vulnerable. The program also brings money into the state, supporting local farms and food producers that schools purchase from throughout Vermont.

Thank you to New England Dairy and our dairy farmers for helping to promote this valuable program and keeping kids ready to learn!

Henry Dizek is part of the 6th generation at Mapleline Farm in Hadley, MA. He's going into his junior year of high school, but during the summer he works on the farm.

Dairy farming is a year-round job, but summer can be especially busy. Multiple times during the summer, farmers cut grasses, alfalfa, or a mixture of the two when the plants are at the right stage for good nutrition. After cutting, the forage is spread out in the field to dry. Once it reaches the right moisture level, farmers gather it and either bale it as hay or chop and store it as haylage. This carefully timed process helps farmers preserve nutritious forage that will feed their cows throughout the year.

PSA: Don’t pour out the liquid sitting on top of your yogurt! That liquid is whey, a natural part of yogurt that contains protein and nutrients. Simply stir it back in for a creamier texture, or even add it to smoothies for an easy nutrition boost. A small step that helps you enjoy every part of your yogurt.

Protein? Check. Calcium? Check. Sustainability? Also check. πŸ₯›βœ…

You already know dairy foods can bring important nutrients to your diet, but dairy farms are also working on some pretty impressive sustainability practices too. From manure management and soil health to water conservation and making the most of cow feed, farmers are continually looking for ways to use resources wisely.

Turns out dairy really is an overachiever.
