Apricot Apiaries

Apricot Apiaries We are growing a small beekeeping business in the John Day River valley around Kimberly, Oregon.

Focusing on pollination and honey, we also hope to include in the near future, locally raised queens and bees for sale, as well as beekeeping supplies.

Observation hive is back in the Honey Stand!

I installed them with two empty combs so they have some room to grow. The empties are both on the front side of the cart, so step around back and to see more of the action (the door is a little sticky).

The queen is marked with a white paint dot. Stop in and watch the colony grow. They will be very different in 2-3 weeks.

Today was a sexy kind of day for queen bees in Kimberly, Or!

These two ladies are exhibiting “mating sign.” The white stringy bit hanging out oh her abdomen is actually the leftovers of a drones’s endophallus. The workers will clean this up and in a few days she will be ready to lay.

These ladies are getting some attention!

This spring has been a series of little fires. Mechanical problems, transportation confusion, and interesting weather patterns. Among others.

I want to say major thanks to Russel Heitkam for getting my bees into almonds, and all the other ways he has offered support over the years.

And also to Brian Rector of Willamette Valley Beekeepers (something like that) for bringing my stray hives to a baseball tournament in Redmond, which is way closer to home than Orland, CA or Lebanon, OR.

And a major thanks to Brittany Dye of Brittany’s bees for loaning me her old truck while mine was in the shop. She is a great neighbor and ya’ll should buy her honey when you get the chance.

Thanks everyone for continued support. First queens are looking great and nucs are on their way.

Two big rounds of queen cells in progress and a free day to work on container village version 2.0.

I am thrilled with how this is looking. More than twice as much covered space and a better view to boot!

Bees are home!

In this episode of beekeeping misadventures, my truck breaks down halfway to Dayville. We drive the forklift to the nearest house to call the semi and give him a different location to meet us.

I learned that the forklift trailer holds 32 hives. And that using it to scatter bees throughout the orchard turns a 1 hour job (with truck) into a 4 hour job!

Coffee tastes amazing after moving bees in the rain.

It’s been a whirlwind in CA this year. Almonds came and went, early and fast. Prunes came and went, early and fast. I’ve spend the last week stocking singles, mating nucs, and filling my belly with oranges. Time to get home for spring.
