Option 3: Reverse Osmosis Filtering System

The third way to filter water is with a Reverse Osmosis filtering system, such as Crescent Hills Water offers.

Reverse Osmosis is the most effective way to make water safe, pure and better tasting. According to the Crescent Hills web site,

“Reverse Osmosis has the ability to remove 99% of minerals and chemicals that make water unsafe to drink, as well as remove the bad-tasting elements. So it makes water both safe to drink and good-tasting. An RO Unit can remove poisons such as arsenic, asbestos, atrazine (e.g., herbicides and pesticides), lead, mercury, radium and nitrates. It can also remove fluoride and excess sodium that affect water’s purity and taste. It does not remove minerals that are vital for good health.”

Fluoridation

One of the elements that Reverse Osmosis removes from water is fluoride. According to fluoridealert.org,

“Not all water filters… remove fluoride. The three types of filters that can remove fluoride are reverse osmosis, deionizers (which use ion-exchange resins), and activated alumina… By contrast, ‘activated carbon’ filters (e.g., Brita & Pur) do not remove fluoride.”

Some people would prefer that fluoride not be removed from water, because of the protection it gives to teeth. But here is what Crescent Hills Water has to say about that:

“Recent studies indicate that fluoridation of public water may not be as healthful as originally thought. It may have little benefit for teeth after childhood. Humans only consume about 2% of all fluoridated water. So, there are more effective alternatives to fluoridating an entire water supply. For example, the application of fluoride tablets and vitamins may provide a safer, more precise dose to your children. Also, most toothpastes today contain fluoride. Fluoride can also be added to salt in the same way it is added to water. But, unlike public water, salt intake can be monitored individually.”

So, there are better alternatives to fluoridating an entire water supply, such as supplements and toothpaste. That is a small price to pay for the superior filtering ability of Reverse Osmosis.

Option 2: Faucet-Mounted Filter

The second way to filter water is with a faucet-mounted filter, such as PUR offers.

In most ways, they do a better job filtering out impurities – especially lead – than pitcher filters. Like pitcher filters, faucet-mounted filters use carbon to do their filtering. Here’s what PUR says about their filters:

“The vast majority of filters used by consumers once water reaches our homes are made of activated carbon… As a result, a faucet-mounted filter from PUR will remove chlorine; pharmaceuticals and chemicals; heavy metals such as lead and mercury; and other organic compounds that can give water an unwelcome taste and odor.”

As with pitcher filters, the emphasis is on taste and odor rather than purity. Also, as with all carbon-based filters, faucet-mounted filters do not remove nitrates or fluoride.

So, while faucet-mounted filters do have an advantage over pitcher filters in that they are more effective, especially when it comes to lead, they are still carbon-based and still limited in what they can filter out.

And what about it being attached to the end of the faucet? Some users complain that it gets in their way. Wouldn’t it be better to have a system that filters the water coming through your faucet without the attachment? A system that does a better job than carbon-based filters are capable of? A system that offers options such as chilling the water, being attached to your ice-maker, etc?

Option 1: Pitcher Filter

The first way to filter water is with a pitcher filter, such as Brita offers.

This is the simplest, least expensive way to go. But – and this is a big BUT – you are basically just filtering out the bad-tasting elements, such as the chemical aftertaste left by your local water treatment plant. Most pitcher filter companies do NOT claim to filter out lead or bacteria. Here’s what the Brita web site states:

“See what we filter out of your tap. Our standard pitcher filters use coconut-based activated carbon with ion exchange resin in a BPA-free housing to reduce chlorine taste and odor, zinc, and the health contaminants copper, cadmium and mercury.”

“It does not remove all of the minerals from the water. It reduces the concentration of calcium and magnesium with cation ion exchange resins, but these substances are not completely removed as in desalination systems or industrial plants that use reverse osmosis or distillation processes, for example.”

So a pitcher filter does an incomplete job of filtering. Two things that pitcher and faucet-mounted filters – as well as all other carbon-based technologies – have in common: they do not remove nitrates or fluoride. We will come back to fluoride later under Option 3: Reverse Osmosis Filtering System.

Three Ways to Get
better-tasting, purer drinking water

This is a three-part series on three options: three ways to get better-tasting, purer drinking water for your home or office, while still protecting the environment. We will list all three, then deal with each one separately in different posts. The three ways are

1) use a pitcher filter, such as Brita offers;
2) use a faucet-mounted filter, such as PUR offers;
3) use a Reverse Osmosis filtering system, such as Crescent Hills Water offers.

Let’s look at all three. But first, why did I not list bottled water? Bottled water is very often just Reverse Osmosis water in a bottle. The plastic bottles are the problem. They are not biodegradable, and therefore are a hazard to the environment. According to lifehacker.com,

“In general, there are no major health advantages to drinking bottled water… The only time it’s generally recommended that you drink bottled water instead of tap water is if you’re in a group at high-risk for infection…”

Most people drink bottle water for the taste, not the health benefits.

Why did I not list spring or well water? Spring and well water varies in composition, depending upon the source and location. Just because the label on a water bottle says “spring water” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better than what is coming out of your faucet. It may taste better, but taste does not necessarily mean “better for you.”

In order to KNOW that you are getting the best water for your family and staff, you need to start with good water and then filter it to remove the harmful elements. Even spring and well water needs to be filtered. And there are three ways to do that, as I have mentioned.

Can Reverse Osmosis Help with Hard Water?

The answer is NO – Reverse Osmosis (RO) cannot help with hard water. If you have hard water, then you need to consider installing a water softener for your home or office.

Calcium and magnesium, minerals that are found in hard water, are extremely difficult for any Reverse Osmosis system to remove. Instead, they tend to clog the system and interfere with its working. Thus, a traditional water softener needs to be installed that will soften your water before it goes through your Reverse Osmosis system. This simple step will protect your system and save you money in the long run.

Did you know that there are many charities that are fighting to help get clean and safe drinking water to those around the world who lack it? charity: water is one of them. Here's a little about them.

It's hard not to think about water today. In the western world, we face growing concerns about our stewardship of the world's most precious resource. There's talk of shortages, evidence of reservoirs and aquifers drying up, and of course, plenty of people who simply don't care.

But forget about us.

Most of us have never really been thirsty. We've never had to leave our houses and walk five miles to fetch water. We simply turn on the tap, and water comes out. Clean. Yet there are 800 million people on the planet who don't have clean water.

It's hard to imagine what 800 million people looks like really, but one in nine might be easier. One in nine people in our world doesn't have access to the most basic of human needs. Something we can't imagine going 12 hours without.

What is Reverse Osmosis (RO)?

To understand Reverse Osmosis, let's first examine the concept of osmosis. Osmosis is the natural process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane. They naturally move from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one. Thus the process equalizes the concentrations on either side of the membrane.

With plants, special cell walls act as the membrane through which water passes, bringing with it the nutrients that feed the plant.

In water purification, a synthetic membrane separates water with a high concentration of contaminants from water with a low concentration. Reverse osmosis forces the water with the high concentration through the membrane to the other side using normal water pressure. Only molecules of water can easily pass through that membrane; so the water emerges on the other side purified. This leaves the impurities behind and rinses them down a waste drain.

How Reverse Osmosis Works in Our System

Even though we use very scientifically advanced membranes, the contaminants on the concentrated side can damage them. Thus, we need to service the water filtration unit once a year to maintain its effectiveness. This system gives you clean, pure, natural water that can be used for all your water needs, including drinking, ice cubes, watering plants, etc.

Reverse osmosis purifies water and makes it taste better, fresher and cleaner. It treats a wide range of aesthetic contaminants that cause unpleasant taste, color and odor.
