Here’s a follow up to yesterday’s bear attack. God didn’t promise us that we would not go through hard times but rather He would walk with us through those hard times. Thank you to all for your prayers and support.

I’m very disappointed and disgusted. A man works his tail end off every day to manage his bees and for what so a sorry bear can destroy your equipment and bees.
This time one of my temporary mating yards got destroyed. I set up 15 nucleus hives (starter hives) to replace the 12 hives I lost last year at a separate yard in Stokes County when a bear attacked it.

First round of splits are done and I have placed the queens cells in them. They should have hatched from their cells by now and getting ready to go on their mating flights towards the end of the week.

If you or someone you know would like to get into beekeeping reach out to me to purchase one of our 5-frame nucs. They are $200 per hive.

They’ll come with 3 frames of brood, 2 frames of food, bees and a laying queen. The queens in these nucs are daughters raised from Corey Stevens Missouri Mite Hunter F1 daughters that were open mated with drones from our local stock.

I have been asked what bees do in the winter time. Honey bees do not hibernate in the winter like some insects do. Instead, when the temperatures fall below 45 degrees, they will form a tight cluster usually in the middle of the hive around the queen and any brood (new bees waiting to hatch), if any, in the hive. I have found in some hives the cluster close to one of the outside walls especially, if the sun in the daytime is shining on that side of the hive.

The bees on the outside of the cluster will quiver their wing muscles to generate heat and when they get tired and cold, they will move towards the inside of the cluster and a new set of bees will replace them to continue the heating process. The cluster will keep the space around itself somewhere between 85-94 degrees while the outer space in the hive will be colder. If there is not enough bees in the hive to sustain the space around them the aforementioned temperature, then the bees will die from getting too cold.

I’m attaching a picture of what a cluster looks like when you open a hive this time of the year.
What an amazing little creature that God created.

I did some winter inspections last week when it was in the 60’s to put a little feed on the bees and see if the queens had started laying yet and, if so, just how much brood was present in the hives. Here are a few pictures of what I saw in most of my hives.
