Goldenrod is one of the most important late-season food sources for pollinators like honey bees, bumble bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. It blooms right when a lot of other flowers are winding down, making it especially valuable going into fall.

If you’ve got goldenrod growing on your property, consider leaving it alone and letting the pollinators enjoy it!

🐝 What you’re seeing is a waggle dance!

Honey bees use this fascinating dance to tell their sisters where to find nectar and pollen. The angle of the dance points the direction, and the length of the waggle tells the distance.

No GPS. No maps. Just one tiny bee dancing her way through the hive.

🐝 Honey Bee Fact of the Day ✈️

A worker honey bee may fly up to 500 miles during her lifetime while collecting nectar and pollen.

That’s roughly the distance from New York City to Charlotte, NC!

Not bad for an insect that weighs less than a paperclip.

🐝 Swarm Catch of the Day!

I gave these bees a perfectly good hive with 10 good frames and all the room they could want…

So naturally, they moved into the attic. 🤦🏻‍♂️ 😂

When I opened the hive, I found the entire swarm living between the inner cover and the lid while the brood box below sat almost completely empty.

Apparently honey bees don’t always read the instructions.🤪

🐝 Ever seen bees hanging outside their hive like this?

This is called bearding. On hot days, some of the workers gather outside to help keep the inside of the hive cool and comfortable.

Thousands of bees working together without a single air conditioner. Nature is pretty amazing.
