Reedley College recently hosted the Agriculture Conference at the McClarty Center for Fine and Performing Arts. It was a great opportunity for farmers, service providers, academia, and government officials to come together and exchange ideas and perspectives. California agriculture is an industry that remains strong, innovative, and sustainable; and it was encouraging to see a wide range of individuals united by a desire to see the Central Valley’s agricultural landscape continue to thrive for years to come. A large part of the conference consisted of different panels expressing their unique viewpoints on topics like the state of agriculture today, ag education and innovation, and food safety.

On one of our plum ranches, we’ve installed a new type of netting to protect against hail. Unlike the netting that we’ve used in the past, these nets can be rolled up when not in use and simply unrolled when we approach times when hail may be damaging to our developing fruit.

This harvest season, we have partnered with Bloomfield to test out a new monitoring system in our grape vineyards. Two high powered cameras are attached to a tractor so that each time the tractor drives through our vineyards it will capture photos of current conditions. These images are analyzed to give us insights into counts and sizes for shoots, berries and bunches along with the geo location of each vine photographed. In the future, we hope to have the capability to capture data on the color and maturity of the grapes as well.

The start of our California table grape season is a little unique this year. Due to the fairly low number of triple digit degree days this summer and cooler than average nights, color is developing more quickly than in past summers. This strange but welcome start means that sugar and flavor have been catching up to color this year, when the opposite is normally true.

Many of our table grape varietals are currently going through the veraison stage. During veraison, the grapes ripen and accumulate natural sugars. Red and black grapes gain color and green grapes become less opaque.

Our table grapes are still in their “sizing” period, when the berries on each grape cluster grow exponentially. During this time, the developing grapes are vulnerable to sunburn. One way to combat this risk is by providing shade through the vineyard’s natural canopy. Here you can see the difference between a fully developed canopy and one that hasn’t quite crossed over to connect in the middle of the row.

In a similar concept to stone fruit thinning, we also thin our table grape bunches. Thinning the bunches (also known as “shatter”) removes excess berries from the clusters, allowing those that remain to receive all of the vine’s nutrients which results in larger and tastier grapes. Thinning the bunches also prevents the clusters from becoming too tight.

Thinning is underway in our stone fruit orchards. Thinning is the process of removing excess or under-sized fruit in order to allow our trees to focus on providing the remaining fruit with nutrients in order to grow peaches, plums, and nectarines with a good size and delicious flavor. In these before and after photos you can see how much excess fruit we remove in the orchards and how much is left behind to grow.
