Hard pill 💊 to swallow- If your horse isn’t right for you, then you are not right for them either.
The cycle of sending horses off to a trainer, the owner undoing the training, sending off to a different trainer, the owner untraining, over and over, is what often creates problem horses.
If you can work WITH a trainer, long term, who puts you on other horses, works with your horse, and oversees what you do with you horse, than that’s great! Maybe we can make this work. But a lot of people don’t have access to that.
A different owner who is more comfortable with a green horse, or more comfortable asserting boundaries, or not bothered by a spook, will likely get along with the horse just fine.
And honestly- some people shouldn’t own a horse. If you can’t canter, can’t assert boundaries (and maybe it’s just physically difficult for you to do so) then JUST GO TAKE LESSONS!! The lesson horse can be cantered by someone else. The trainer will maintain ground manners. If you physically can’t run 20 feet, basic ground work is gonna be tough. (Not impossible! (See Silke Valentin)
Maybe you can find an aged horse that is perfect for you!!! But if you have a horse that you just struggle with, and you wonder if this is a bad match, it probably is. And you’re not a bad person if you sell that horse to someone who gets along with them!
