Well… this wasn’t how I planned to demonstrate one of the traditional uses of colloidal silver. 😂

I walked over to my neighbor’s fence line to visit one of my favorite horses, caught my foot on a vine I didn’t see, and went FACE FIRST onto the asphalt.

Face. Hands. Knee. Hip. Pride. 😬

After getting everything thoroughly cleaned, I reached for something that has a fascinating history in wound care: silver.

Long before modern antibiotics, silver was used topically in the care of wounds, burns, and damaged skin because of its antimicrobial properties. And silver hasn’t completely disappeared from modern wound care, either—certain medical-grade silver dressings and topical products are still used in medicine today for particular wounds.

I think it’s pretty fascinating that something with such a long history continues to be studied and used in different forms today.

That bright yellow “weed” you see growing along roadsides, fields, fence lines—and also on my property—is Goldenrod...one of my favorite misunderstood plants.

Goldenrod has a LONG history of use in traditional herbal practices. The flowers and leaves have been gathered, dried and used in teas, tinctures and other preparations.

Traditionally, goldenrod has been used for things like:

🌿 Urinary tract and bladder support
🌿 Supporting healthy circulation and strong blood vessels (ahem...🍆 🤭)
🌿 Seasonal respiratory comfort
🌿 Sinus and upper respiratory support
🌿 Digestive support
🌿 Soothing irritated tissues
🌿 Topical preparations for minor skin irritations and wounds

One of its best-documented traditional uses is actually for the urinary system. European herbal medicine has a long history of using goldenrod preparations to increase urinary flow and help “flush” the urinary tract.

And here's something else I find fascinating: Goldenrod often gets blamed for fall allergies because it blooms at the same time as ragweed. But goldenrod's pollen is heavy and sticky and is primarily carried by insects—not floating through the air like ragweed pollen. Poor goldenrod has been taking the blame. 😂

So yes...of course I harvested some! (A lot, actually) 🌼

I'm currently drying the flowers and leaves, and I'll share more about what I'm doing with them later.

The older I get, the more fascinated I am by how many useful plants are growing right outside our doors while we're busy calling them weeds.

Meet ChiPheasant: my favorite tiny little menace to farm life. 😂

ChiPheasant has decided that the chicken pasture is merely a suggestion.

She regularly escapes to visit Ralph and Petunia, and because apparently the nesting boxes I provide are beneath her, she lays her eggs out there too.

And I know exactly what happens when she gets a full clutch.

She goes AWOL.

This little bird KNOWS her name. She will actually respond when I call her... but only when she wants to be found. Once she's sitting on eggs she becomes an elite-level hide-and-seek champion, and I usually spend an hour or more searching for one very tiny, very determined chicken who happens to blend in with dirt.

Today was another disappearing-act day.

I knew she was probably tucked somewhere in the tall grass, so I was walking around poking through it with a stick and calling out to her, knowing she wasn't going to answer. My neighbors must think I'm nuts.

At one point I actually said, “I don't think she would choose the high grass where Ralph could possibly step on her...”

*poke*

OUT FLIES CHIPHEASANT. 🤦‍♀️😂

Apparently she absolutely WOULD choose the tall grass where a donkey could step on her.

She took off running. I found the nest.

I guess I'm incubating bantam eggs again. 😂🐣

PSA: You don't have to wait until Saturday to get Rise Up Bakery. 👀

Our Saturday farmstand is the only day we're open for walk-up shopping, but baked-goods preorders can be picked up three days a week:

🤎 Monday
🤎 Wednesday
🤎 Saturday

And ordering is now done directly through our website.

That means if Wednesday suddenly feels like a cinnamon-roll kind of day—and let's face it, Wednesday usually does—you don't have to wait until the weekend. 😂

Choose what you'd like, select your pickup day and we'll take it from there.

Saturday walk-ups are still welcome beginning at 8:30 AM until sold out..

Small farm. Small-batch bakery. Really good food. Bigger purpose. 💜
