Rootstock from last year that I grafted to scion from pruned tops of some trees I planted in the spring. G890 to be grafted to this spring again.

I pruned 5 Hewes Virginia crabapple trees and cut scion from them. I bagged what would have cost me over $250.00 to buy. I have a row of seedling crabapples growing now that I will top graft with this bag.Now they are in the fridge. I also pruned another 15 trees. Not too shabby for a wet rainy day on The Run.

A plum thicket.
I pruned a lot of the Chickasaw plum trees on the front of The Run yesterday. I took them down to around 8' and thinned out crossing branches. They grow under the electric lines so I have to show that they are being taken care of to keep the power company from messing with them. There are around 15 plum trees in this area.

Pruning on the south side of The Run. The mulberry trees were today's focus.
In most cases, it's best to pollard trees in late Winter or early spring. During the Winter, the trees will be more dormant with a lower sap level, meaning less stress and bleeding will likely occur. Limiting the amount of stress and bleeding will reduce the risk of infection and disease. Mulberry trees bleed black and must be trimmed and pruned in February. I have missed the window for sizing them for a few years. I can use the light for other fruit trees in the grouping. I figured that I would do this work, when I got a Roundtoit. Well today I got one. I also had to use a set of loopers, a couple of saws and a couple of ladders. These trees have been very productive and I consider them part of the fruit orchard component of Mulberry Run
