Outdoor weatherproof shelters being utilized in the winter need to offer quality protection from the elements…especially from cold air temperatures, rain, ice, sleet, and snow.
❄️ The shelter should be a sufficient size for the pet to comfortably stand, turn around, and lay down in.
❄️ The shelter should ideally be elevated up off of the ground enough to keep water, ice, snow, and sleet from entering the shelter.
❄️ Plenty of dry straw or cedar shavings should be provided for warmth.
❄️ The shelter entrance should face away from the direct wind. A solid wind block for a shelter can be made with tarps, straw bales, or a combination of both.
❄️ Crates, carriers, barrels, under houses/ porches/vehicles, are not acceptable shelters.
Bringing pets inside during extreme weather is ALWAYS the best plan. Freezing temperatures and precipitation can prove deadly to outdoor and unprotected animals.
