So here's the long story of Nacho's delivery yesterday -
She went into active labor (pushing) around 10:30am. She pushed and pushed for almost 45 mins and the first pup would not come out, the shoulders and head were just stuck. I tried to help pull a little, very gently, but no luck, and the pup was not moving at all... so Lincoln and I loaded up the maternity ward (kiddie pool) and raced to the vet.
*sidenote* the only reason I was home yesterday was because I had a low tire, so I also had to pump up the tire first, and took the compressor with us just in case. In hindsight, the half-flat was a blessing in disguise 😊
About a mile from the house she did manage to get baby #1 out. I pulled over and pulled the sac from him, tried to clear the mucus from his mouth and get him breathing - with no luck. Back in the car, I said we'll go ahead and get to the vet just in case she has trouble with the next one, too.
Ten minutes or so later, Lincoln says she's had another. I pull over again, and there are THREE more! Again I had to peel the sacs from their faces and clear the gunk out (literally doing puppy CPR on the side of the road). I was able to get two of them breathing, lost another one.
So we finally get to the vet with 4 puppies, 2 of them alive. They rushed Nacho in for an xray. While we were waiting for the results, Nacho had another pup in the waiting room (perfectly fine, she was able to chew the sac herself). They disposed of the 2 dead pups for us.
Vet comes out and says she looks like she's good to go from here, she has two more pups in her but they don't see any cause for worry. We loaded her and her three babies back up and headed home. She had her last two shortly after we got back to the house.
It was a stressful day for sure, but Mama Nacho and her five pups are all doing great now!
