It's been forever since we have posted anything. It's not that nothing has been happening, it's just that we are less active on the social medias than we used to be.
What's going on …
It's July 6th, and we have been dealing with a rather brutal drought now since the beginning of the year. We never got the May flush of pasture grass that we always count on. Luckily, we didn't have any lambs this year (Farmer Todd had yet ANOTHER shoulder surgery) and so, we are not overloaded with ruminant mouths to feed. We'll get to winter just fine. We think. Our concern is the hay supply come winter. The hay producers surely have seen their stocks of hay diminished by, and I am guessing, by half or more. We'll see in November. Oddly, despite the drought, we have brought in a bumper crop of blueberries and blackberries.
What else?
We now have two dogs. Huckleberry has a best buddy forever now. They are two peas in a pod. We always recommend two dogs or two cats so that they have each other and not just the human. That's if you can swing it. Two dogs means double the care and cost (vet bills, ugh).
Other news …
Right now as we speak we have the house being worked on to fix some rot issues on the northern facing side. We've known about the problem since we purchased the place. 11 years later, we are finally addressing it. Advice: Only purchase a historic home if you are ready to sink a giant portion of your retirement funds into repairing it. We were ready … sort of. The expense has far surpassed what we had expected.
Births! No new lambs this year, but we have chicks! The chickens got all broody, as they do in May / June (egg count takes a hit!), but this time we decided to let one of them raise a batch of new chicks. Mama Hen sat on 16 eggs and hatched 7. Woot! It's been nearly 3 weeks and the chicks are bouncing all over the place. We worry about them getting themselves into trouble, but so far so good.
