Everyone that sees this page knows that I don't post often enough, but its hard when I run the page from 180 miles from where the cows are. For that I apologize.
I made the trip down to Klamath today to help the family work the calves. It was a quick trip, so I didn't take the time to take any pics, but trust me, this set of calves is fantastic!
Over the last 7 years, my daughter has brought calves up from this herd of cows to show in Crook County. This fair in the time I have been the FFA Advisor has had an incredibly competitive steer show. Last year, Abby opted not to show due to the Covid uncertainty and the fact that he would have been the only FFA steer at a show with no overall champion being select. She continued to feed her steer and I know if he'd been shown under normal conditions, he would have been right in the mix. In her previous six years, Abby has had 3 Grand Champions, 1 Reserve, a 4th overall and a 6th overall. Shes got one this year that I expect will do well for her again. Yes, she's always had first pick of the calves, but she has taken these calves and made them into something that could compete with the best around. They feed well and show well.
In addition to these calves, others have had success as well. Ask the Guthrie family in Tulelake what they think of the Moonlight calves. I know they have had a ton of success in the past few years.
This set of calves, bar none, is the deepest set of calves I've ever seen off of this place! There are a dozen steers that at this point, I would happily put my daughter on the halter of. I would also not hesitate to say that she may be leading, at this point, the best one she's ever lead. That's saying a lot considering her success over the past.
And don't get me started on the heifer calves...wish a guy could keep them all!
It's going to be an interesting summer with the water situation in the Basin, but if these calves handle it well with the limited feed situation they are in and will continue to experience, it is going to be a real pleasure to walk through this set this fall when it is time for anyone to pick for next year.
Hopefully, I will make it down again in the next month or two and can get some pics to post.
