Greener pasture for the yaks!

15th calf tagged for 2026! We started giving a vitamin boost supplement when we pick up the calves. We give bull calves blue tags, heifers green. The year is a letter (2026=C) plus whatever number calf they are that year. Mom’s name/number is on the back for easier identification a year from now. The whole process takes a few minutes and we send the calf on his way!

One of the common questions people ask is, “what is it like to work with yaks?” Here’s an example of Nils walking through the herd of 60 and moving them off the bales in order to pull the twine off. A few swings of the twine is enough for them to give him space and the bulls don’t mind either. Now that we’re through calving season, the moms have calmed down and we are safe being around even the most protective yaks.

Our wooly lady Marley (dubbed Bob Marley by a visitor to our farm last week) always has something stuck in her hair!

One of those days where one task turns into an all-day project. Getting a skidsteer out of deep mud is something I’ve never enjoyed but somehow it just keeps happening…🫠

This is one of those projects we kept putting off because dealing with plumbing can always end up being a can of worms. However, we managed to replace our pump in a couple hours (including tool searching time 😵‍💫). This pump irrigates a few acres of precious grass our animals would love to munch on! Lesson learned: winterize your pump before freezing temps!!

Projects around the farm as a family of five may end up taking more time and may be a little more messy, but the company isn’t half bad. 😊
