Locust Farms

Locust Farms We are a small family homestead using the available products to grow. eat and share with our local community while learning a lot along the way.

We bought this hilly central Indiana property in fall of 2007 and it had already been named Locustfarms before we bought it. There are pretty, but thorny, Locust trees that bloom in May and their pretty white blossoms (almost) make up for the fact that their thorns have ruined every tire we take out to the pasture :) We have 4 young children and it was a dream to be able to learn alongside them a

s we began raising and learning about our own food supply. Our honey and maple syrup has grown to more than we can eat, so we would like to make it available to our local area. We hope that our farm can grow to provide for our family in many different ways and hopefully share sustainable, local, yummy food with our community at the same time.

Syrup season is rapidly approaching. Many more ash trees killed by the emerald ash borer beetle have fallen this year, causing damage to sap collection tubing and blocking trails. We are working diligently to complete the necessary cleanup and repair work before it is time to tap the trees and commence this year’s syrup production!

Last weekend, a group of veterans from Vets IN Farming came to learn about syrup farming and help tap the trees for the 2024 season. We installed about 100 taps, repaired damaged tubing, and installed a new section of mainline tubing. The sap has started flowing and we will process our first batch this weekend!
