Happy Easter! Today, we plan to spend the day enjoying eachother and feasting on a home cooked family meal.

Our boys have been spending a lot of time with a gang of neighborhood boys riding ebikes, fishing, playing ball, riding to the neighborhood shopping center for food or candy, and generally just finding their independence with friends. It makes us happy knowing they're creating core memories.

Today, we plan to spoil them a bit and spend time appreciating their maturing personalities while we relax and cook and play games together. We hope you all enjoy the day!

Last fall, we were given this orange tree by a neighbor moving to Texas. She told us that it's only a few years old and that last year they got a bunch of oranges off of it. It is covered in flower buds right now. There must be 100. She is currently living in a large pot. We are deciding on the perfect spot for her. Our peach, apple and plum trees are loving the southwest side of our house, so this tree may join our little orchard. Who has grown oranges in the south? What can you recommend?

Last night, we had quite a storm. We woke this morning to temps in the 30s. I knew it was coming, and I knew it would mean bread. There is nothing like baking bread on a cold, stormy day. It's been quite awhile since I made a jalapeño cheddar loaf. Today, I baked two, and our house smells divine!

We are on spring break this week. It's been glorious! The lazy sleep-ins, the slow, home cooked meals, the unscheduled family time, the luxury of choice, the sunshine, the abundance of eggs and sourdough bread baking are all giving us a taste of what summer has in store for us.

48 more school days! We are so close!

These are the YES moments we planned for when we decided to buy a home in a traditional neighborhood instead of rural property. Our boys can hop on their new ebikes and cruise the neighborhood with their friends. They often venture to the nearest shops and restaurants spending their money on burgers or tacos. They are becoming more independent, and having the ability to spread their wings and spend quality time with friends who live close by is a bonus! We've had some please, spring like afternoons lately. It’s given us a little taste of what this next summer will look like. Our Wild & Free boys will be off cruising the neighborhood with their friends. These are the days they will remember!

It's the second time making bread with my gifted starter. These rounds are even better than the ones I baked two weeks ago.

I listened to my mom and added a bit of organic rye flour when I fed my starter two days ago, and I used a strong bread flour when I mixed the dough instead of just using unbleached white flour, which is what I typically feed my starter with.

We haven't cut into the loaves yet. That will be the true test. However, If looks determined the success of my new strategy, I'd day we achieved success!

Before we moved to east TN, I anticipated the southern heat, but not the frigid winters. Little did I know that Knoxville actually gets a winter. Maybe not as extreme as we were used to in Alaska, but we definitely get cold, wintery weather.

Today, our chickens took one look at the white stuff and said, "nope!". It's their first winter, and this morning they stayed huddled together inside the coop until we brought them scratch.

Ryan is going to rig something so that their run is protected during a snow storm. This will help encourage them to still get outside daily, even in the winter.

I really do love our whimsical, little coop. It looks perfect in the snowy setting butted up against the wooded area behind our house.

Bristol Joy woke up to inches of snow and a snow flurry. She and her Pyrenees pack mates came alive in the snow.

I have recently wondered when/if we'll get a knock on the door by some uneducated official telling us that we are neglecting our dogs by not bringing them inside.

This girl dove face first into the snow and pranced with glee before breakfast.

What a disservice it would be to her spirit to lock her indoors during a snow day!

There's 3+ inches of snow on the ground, and its still coming down. While having lived in Alaska prepares our family for much more than what we see out our window, this area doesn't seem prepared for any. Everything shuts down and things get cancelled.

We are expecting several days of home hibernation again this weekend, and we won't be surprised when Knox County Schools calls to say there's no school on Monday or Tuesday.

While the rest of east TN figures out how to live in a snow globe, we will take this gift of quiet time at home to nest and bake and spend quality family time together.

Stay safe everyone!

It's been a minute.

Nearly two years to be exact. I went from baking a dozen round loaves a week to nearly two years of store bought bread.

As we got settled here in east TN other priorities took precedence. Finding a superior starter fell further down the list.

On Friday, I met Shannon, who talked lovingly about her home baked sourdough, as people who bake sourdough often do.

I interjected and quickly asked if she had a good starter. She did, and she offered me some.

I am so excited to get my dough started and to get it into my forgotten proofing baskets.

This is a perfect way to spend a stormy weekend.
