Stingerhouse Farms

Stingerhouse Farms Stingerhouse Farms is a family operated micro apiary dedicated first and foremost to the health of the honey bee. It has become a passion and is full of reward.

Our bees are not chemically treated for any reason or fed sugar syrup for honey production, giving us raw pure healthy honey. Stingerhouse Farms was born from the idea of having a self sustaining micro eco system free from chemicals and pesticides on a small piece of property. At first we focused on our gardens, rain water collection, canning etc. We still do all those, but it was Kim DeSocio who

had the desire to add bees to our circle of life. After much research and learning about the struggle of the bees it was an easy decision to take on bee keeping. We did not start this to make money and it is still a way of life for us before it is a business. It is our desire to work with nature in it's many forms. We are happy to be able to share those rewards with others. In short, take care of nature and she will take care of you. Don't take care of nature and she may "take care" of you. ;)

A view into what we look for when we are going into the hives. We look for eggs first : this lets us know that the queen is doing her thing and growing the population .
Then larva : so we can see how many new ladies are forming and what stage they are in.
Then capped: this shows us that everything going the way it should and we should see new bees in a few weeks .As well as to determined any steps we need to take to make sure there is enough room for growth ~ Kim 🌻

Got a lot of work done here today. Beside the every day chores....Stretched out 100 foot of horse fence, leveled some ground for more fence, and disked up some ground so we can seed for pasture grass. Also found time to hit an auction today and picked up a few nice items. It's been a full day! =)

Finally, after a long cold winter, and a few weeks of no egg laying, our chickens are starting to fill our egg basket again! We actually had to buy eggs from the store for those few weeks. You don't realize how spoiled you get from farm fresh eggs until they stop laying! So happy the chickens are back in business!! =)

Progress report on the horses. Working a little more with Jazzy. Walking her a bit, making her move a little to loosen up her joints. I can lift 3 of her hooves, 2 fronts and 1 rear. She still can't support her weight on one rear hoof to be able to lift the other for me. As she regains her muscle around her hips and gets a little exercise each day I'm hoping that will change. Allister and I are coming along great. I halter him daily now. each time gets better but we still go through that initial chase. And that's ok. Today after getting him haltered we worked on some basic foot control and de-sensitizing (sacking out). I made him move side to side, forward, and backward. Barkward was a bit of a challenge but we got through that also. The really exciting thing for me though...I was able to pick up his hooves today! He's still a bad boy though because while I bent over for his fronts he nipped my rear end. I ignored the first one (which was really hard to do)..and when he tried again had to give him a light tap to the nose. He jumped but not hard enough for me to have to drop his hoof which was awesome. That tells me he got the message and accepted that I didn't like what he was doing but wasn't out to hurt him. Otherwise he would have went into flight mode and no way could I have held on to it. He gave me no problems with his rears which AMAZED me because in all honesty it took alot for me to put my mind at ease enough to do it. I think he was ready before I was. =)

Picked up 4 Barred Rock chicks today and introduced them to our 2 week old Rhode Island Reds. So far so good but a couple of the Rhode Islands know something is a miss. I want to use this flock to do some cross breeding next spring. Gonna call them Rhode Island Rocks. =). I also must take a moment to promise Kim I'm done this year with animals..I promise...I will not bring home anything else!! =)
