Dallas, Texas’ very own, Erykah Badu.
Born Erica Abi Wright on February 26, 1971, Badu discovered her love for performing at an early age, singing and dancing alongside her mother before honing her craft through theater and the arts in her hometown. After leaving Grambling State University to pursue music full-time, she caught her big break opening for D’Angelo in 1994, which led to a record deal and the release of her groundbreaking debut album, Baduizm, in 1997.

The album helped usher neo soul into the mainstream, earning Badu the title of the “Queen of Neo Soul.” She followed it with a string of critically acclaimed projects, Grammy-winning music, and timeless records that blended soul, jazz, hip-hop, and funk, influencing generations of artists in the process.

Nearly three decades later, Erykah remains one of music’s most original and respected voices, continuing to shape culture while proving that true artistry never goes out of style.

The Legacy of Nivea
Born Nivea B. Hamilton on March 24, 1982, in Atlanta, Georgia, Nivea grew up as the youngest of three sisters and began singing in her church choir. Inspired by Mariah Carey, she was initially shy about sharing her voice, but music would eventually become her career.

She first gained attention in 2000 after appearing on Mystikal’s hit “Danger (Been So Long)” before launching her solo career with Jive Records. Her self-titled debut introduced her as one of R&B’s rising voices in the early 2000s, with songs like “Don’t Mess with the Radio,” “Don’t Mess with My Man” and “25 Reasons.”

“Don’t Mess with My Man,” featuring Brian and Brandon Casey of Jagged Edge, became her biggest hit, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning her a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

She followed with Complicated in 2005 and Animalistic in 2006, continuing to build her presence in R&B during the era. While her signature work remains rooted in the early 2000s, Nivea has continued to stay active in music and remains connected to the industry today, more than two decades after her debut.

The two met in 1983 while Dolph was working as a bouncer at a concert in Sydney, Australia. Impressed by his presence, Grace Jones hired him as her personal bodyguard, and the professional relationship quickly turned romantic.

Lundgren eventually left his academic pursuits behind and moved to New York with Jones, who helped introduce him to the entertainment industry by landing him a small role in the 1985 James Bond film A View to a Kill.

For three years, the couple became one of the 1980s’ most talked-about pairings, living fast, frequenting legendary clubs, and moving in the same circles as artists, musicians, and fashion icons. But everything changed after Lundgren’s breakout performance as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. As his fame skyrocketed, the relationship became increasingly strained. Lundgren later described their breakup as volatile, recalling that Jones once burned his clothes and even showed up at his home carrying a gun. Despite the dramatic ending, both have since spoken respectfully about one another, acknowledging the important role they played in each other’s lives and careers.
