Two doelings for Wishes today 🥰

I was anxious about this kidding, Wishes was the last doe who was bred to Elevan, our lamancha buck. Elevan has excellent, proven daughters out there. I was looking forward to retaining several from him. Instead he gave us mostly bucks.

Very excited to see how these girls grow. Wishes is one of the original goats, and I’ve always loved milking her.

The darker girl is Strawberry, what name do you think fits the little lighter one?

We do this for the kids.

The motivation behind buying our homestead, learning to raise livestock, and eventually building a goat dairy was because we wanted a different life for our kids from what we knew.

We wanted our kids to grow up close to the earth, with nourishing food, and spending time outdoors and with animals.

Raw goat milk has been essential to our lives during multiple stages of our kids’ growth. It’s gotten us and many other families through weaning, teething, and growth spurts. It feels good knowing we are giving our kids a whole-food nutrition boost during critical development periods.

We first became more interested in raw milk a as a natural supplement to nursing - with my oldest I was always worried about my supply and it was comforting to know there was an alternative to formula feeding. Did you know corn syrup solids are the main ingredient in all baby formulas?

Many of our customers trust our milk to feed their children, which is a responsibility we don’t take lightly. It’s why our equipment is always sterilized, the goats are always healthy, and the milk is always chilled immediately.

We trust our milk to feed our family, and yours.

Goat milk is higher in minerals because of their natural diet of browse - weeds and shrubs.

Trees, weeds, and shrubs send their roots down deeper into the earth where they have access to more minerals than shorter-rooted grasses do. These plants store those minerals in their bark, leaves, and branches, which are the choice food for goats.

An adequate supply of minerals is key to good health, and what better way to get them than through a whole, perfect food?

This girl’s name is Coconut, so you could say you’re having ‘coconut milk’ 😆

But around here we think raw goat milk is better 😉

Check your Kamiah and Grangeville Cloninger’s shelves this afternoon for fresh raw goat milk.

Liquid gold under the rainbow

Today we’re feeling thankful for the rain; it made us slow down and take a break. We’re guilty of rushing around most of the time.

It gave me a chance to do some cooking with our goat milk - a chèvre cheesecake and poutine with from-scratch fries and cheese curds 🤤

What do you like to do to slow down?

What is raw milk?

Short answer: it’s the way humans have been drinking milk for thousands of years.

The federal mandate to pasteurize all milk for sales across state lines didn’t go into effect until September 1987 - within many of our lifetimes!

It’s true that pasteurization was developed to kill potentially harmful pathogens: E. coli, listeria, salmonella. But in properly produced milk those things are not present anyway. Pasteurization was built to sustain milk production in a factory farm setting.

Your local dairy farmers give hands-on care to their animals. We personally inspect each animal daily, so we can ensure the goats that are providing milk for you are healthy. It’s much easier to maintain a high standard when we are milking 10 goats instead of 1000.

Raw milk is completely intact. It contains 60 minerals, with a coenzyme specific to each mineral to aid in absorption. It contains natural vitamin A and D, which is destroyed in pasteurized milk and then synthetically added back.

Raw milk has a balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein lending itself as a ‘perfect food’. It’s easily digestible and promotes gut healing.

Raw goat milk has been the cornerstone of our journey to whole food eating. We’ve seen improved energy, more satiety, and improved digestion the longer it’s been a part of our diet.

To learn more about raw milk, feel free to ask questions! We love talking about it with others. RealMilk.com is another great resource. And a friend of mine has an episode all about raw milk on the Ancestral Kitchen Podcast.
