I love the process of making a compost pile—tending to the microbes and letting them do their magic.
They take dead trees, animals, and rotting food waste as inputs and break them down into the essence of life on our planet: healthy soil.
Through impressive chemistry, they break complex chemical bonds in wood, fueled by nitrogen contained in animal tissues and the fruits of plants.
The end result is what we call compost. It holds the nutrients and energy for the next generation of plants and animals.
These essential nutrients are stabilized by bonding them to carbon and are finally stored back in the Earth.
Making compost is simple, but what is actually happening is highly complex—and has been evolving for billions of years.
Soil nurtures and connects all life on our planet. All life is made from the same basic materials, just mixed a little differently and arranged in unique forms of water.
Life on Earth is water put into motion by the light of our sun—at least, that’s one way to see it
Sorry but not sorry for getting poetic about composting 😄
