What’s just as lovely as receiving tea as a gift? Why receiving books about the history of tea (at least for this history nerd 🙋🏻‍♀️🤓). I’m enjoying two such recent gifts this weekend!
The famous Cha Jing 茶經 (known in English as “The Classic of Tea”) is a Chinese literary work from the mid-8th century during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Its author was the “Tea God” Lu Yu 陸羽 and the Cha Jing was the world's first “book” (technically they were scrolls) written about tea. Lu Yu grew up in a Buddhist temple and, because of the close relationship between the spread of Buddhism and the spread of tea throughout China, he researched and documented cultivation practices in a number of tea growing areas, mainly those belonging to Buddhist temples.
Also during the Tang Dynasty, Japanese monks visited China to study Buddhism thus allowing Camellia sinensis and tea culture to come to Japan. Chinese documents indicate that tea seedlings and bricks were taken to Japan in the middle years of the Tang Dynasty. In the early 9th century, the Japanese monks Saichou 最澄 and Kuukai 空海 brought a large number of tea seeds and bricks from China’s mountains to Japan. These two monks are often regarded as the pioneers of tea planting and picking in Japan.

Kiki 🐓 our rescue rooster loves scrounging for snacks under our Haleakalā Black Tea bushes. What kind of chicken goodies is he scratching for under there? We wanna hear what you think!

Happy Father’s Day weekend 🌞🌱 just like that Summer is upon us! In 'Ōlelo Hawai'i (the Hawaiian language) this hot and sunny half of the year is known as kauwela. In many regions of the world where it’s cultivated, Camellia sinensis (aka tea) absolutely loves the summertime. Look how vigorously our bushes are growing / flushing! Definitely having a healthy dose of wai in the form of rainfall helps. We’ll be amping up our picking schedule as we get into hot and sunny kauwela and look forward to having some delectable summer (or “second flush”) Haleakalā Black Tea harvests ready for you tea lovers!
