Worried about whether or not you need to boil your water?

The short answer is: It depends on your water source.

If you're on a community/city water supply, you should first check with your water provider, but chances are good that your tap water is safe to drink.

If you have a private well, the answer gets a little more complicated. Some factors include the location of your well, and it's proximity to known flow paths in the aquifers. It also depends upon whether you have any disinfection equipment installed in your home. There are two forms of disinfection equipment that are typically used. A chlorine injection system, commonly referred to as a chlorinator, is usually installed directly at the well. An alternative is an ultraviolet lamp, which is a cylindrical stainless steel chamber with a bulb inside, that kills any bacteria that pass through. The UV method is preferred due to long term reliability and far easier maintenance.

Since most people are not fluent in aquifer flow paths, it can be a guessing game as to whether your water is at risk of contamination. If you don't have a means of disinfection, you should consider boiling your drinking/cooking water or switch to bottled water.
