People ask me all the time…”Where did you learn how to do this?”
Myself. By trying and failing on repeat.
“But Sam, I live in the city…how much homesteading can I really do?”
Well, you can do as much as you set your mind to! I don’t have a farm or land, I live in the city. I don’t have fancy equipment or gadgets, just the basics. Also, not everything requires gardening!
This isn’t about saving money.
- This is about learning a skill that we forget was necessary at one point in time.
- This is about exploring and expanding the limits on creating things people don’t think of
- This is about being less and less dependent on others to provide your food
- This is about knowing your family could survive, if needed
- This is about self confidence and gaining skills others don’t have
But mostly, just start.
- Start by boiling your choice of meat bone scraps, now you have meat bone stock!
- Start by researching leftover scraps for anything and what you can do with them
- Start by saving all veggie scraps from a meal, boil with water, and now you have veggie stock!
- Start by asking questions, ask google, ask someone who has the skill
- Start a small garden in a room or raised beds, research preserving produce.
The most important thing to remember, DON’T BE AFRAID TO MESS UP! Start small. I’m still learning everyday, teaching my wife along the way. My shelves are still waiting for more creations, but my love for pasta took priority, clearly 😂
