Timing matters.

The best time to pinch a dahlia isn't based on the calendar, it's based on the plant.

Look for:
✔️ 12–18 inches tall
✔️ At least 3–4 sets of true leaves

Pinch too early and the plant may struggle. Wait too long and you may miss some of the branching benefits.

One of the most common questions we hear each June is:

Should I pinch my dahlias?

The short answer: probably.

Pinching encourages branching, stronger plants, and significantly more blooms throughout the season. In our newest blog post, we're breaking down exactly when to pinch, where to pinch, and what happens afterward.

Every spring, I have the exact same internal argument with myself:

“Maybe I should just plant the dahlias now…”

And then Wisconsin reminds me who’s actually in charge. 😅

As tempting as it is to get tubers in the ground early, cold soil is one of the fastest ways to end up with rot, delayed growth, or weak plants.

Dahlias really do better when you wait for:
✔ consistently warm soil
✔ warmer overnight temps
✔ less excess moisture

A little patience now usually means healthier plants and far better blooms later in the season.

I shared a full planting depth + timing guide on the blog if you’re getting your garden plans ready for spring:

Dahlia planting season is almost here, which means it’s time for one of the most common questions I get every spring:

“How deep should I plant my dahlias?”

Short answer:
🌱 4–6 inches deep
🌱 eyes facing up
🌱 warm soil matters more than the calendar

I put together this full visual guide to help make planting easier, especially if you’re growing dahlias for the first time.

One of the easiest ways to accidentally sabotage your dahlias before they even sprout?

Planting too early. Or planting too shallow.

Dahlias are a little dramatic about cold soil and planting depth, but once you understand what they actually want, they’re incredibly rewarding growers.

I just published a full blog post covering:
🌱 proper planting depth
🌱 timing mistakes to avoid
🌱 spacing recommendations
🌱 how to position the tuber
🌱 why patience pays off with stronger plants + better blooms

If you’re planting dahlias this spring, save this one for later because future-you will absolutely forget how deep the hole was supposed to be. 😅

If you want armfuls of blooms like this…it starts with something that looks like a potato.

Not glamorous. Not impressive.

Just a dahlia tuber tucked into the ground in spring.

But give it a little time, some sunshine, and a lot of faith, and suddenly you’re out here carrying wagon loads of flowers wondering how it got this out of hand.

That’s the magic of dahlias.

We’ll have tubers available at Dahlia Day, along with everything you need to get started if this is your year to grow your own.

Fair warning: you will say you’re only planting a few. You will be wrong. 🌸

Growing dahlias is not just armfuls of blooms and wagon loads of color.

It’s:
Hope in spring.
Mild panic in early summer.
Checking them obsessively in July.
Pure joy when they finally explode into bloom.
Then exhaustion.
Then frost heartbreak.

Every season humbles you. Every season teaches you something. And somehow every season convinces you to do it all over again.

Flower farming is emotional.
And I wouldn’t trade it for anything. 🌸

From free roadside find to flower stand centerpiece. 🌸🚚

We took an old vintage Chevy truck bed and turned it into the heart of our self serve flower stand. No big budget build. No fancy storefront. Just a little vision, a little elbow grease, and a whole lot of flowers.

Turns out you don’t need perfect conditions to start something beautiful. Sometimes you just need a free truck bed and a slightly unhinged idea.

Small farm energy at its finest.

I've been asked a lot recently “What makes you happy?”

This. 🌸

Armfuls of dahlias. Wagon loads of color. Bouquets on the kitchen table that make you stop mid-dishwashing just to stare.

And the wild part? It all starts with one little tuber planted in spring.

I told myself I would “just try a few.”
Anyway…now we farm dahlias.

If you’ve ever looked at flowers and thought, I want that in my yard, this is your sign. (hint: we sell dahlia tubers!)
