Gertrude Has Officially Left the Building

Well, any remaining doubt has officially flown out of the coop.

Earnest crowed for the first time!

This youngster was originally named Gertrude because he gave us no obvious reason to believe he was a cockerel. Then he began mounting a hen, earned his new name, and has now delivered the unmistakable announcement.

Earnest still lives with our 15 laying hens and his father, Cecil. Cecil remains tolerant, but there has been a little tension as Earnest matures. I am watching them closely and already have a separate area prepared if their peaceful father-and-son arrangement changes.

Cecil is remarkably docile, but even the kindest rooster may eventually tell a grown son that the nest is getting crowded.

ONE LITTLE LIFE. Sometimes caring for animals means accepting that the plan we made is not the plan they choose.

When only one chick hatched, I hoped Loretta might accept it. She had successfully raised chicks before and was broody again, but this time she made it very clear that this baby was not hers.

The chick is now safely in the brooder with proper warmth, food, water, a mirror, and a small stuffed companion. After being so distressed and calling constantly, it finally settled down.

It may be only one tiny chick, but one life is never “only” one life when it has been placed in your care.
