A HARD PART OF FARM LIFE

This is a post we never want to write or have to write again.

Most of what you see from Hidden Hilltop is the fun stuff—the babies, the shenanigans, the soap, and all the things that make farm life so special.

But farm life isn't always fun and easygoing. Sometimes it's heartbreaking.

When you raise animals, you don't just care for them. You love them. You learn their personalities, celebrate their good days, and worry through their bad ones.

Sometimes, loving them means making the heartbreaking decision to let them go peacefully rather than allow them to suffer.

So today, there won't be a funny goat story or shenanigans.

Just two friends who love their animals deeply and are facing one of the hardest parts of being farmers.

Farm life is beautiful.
Farm life is rewarding.
Farm life is hard.
And sometimes, farm life breaks your heart.

Please keep us in your thoughts as we say goodbye. ❤️🐐

You could stay somewhere ordinary.

Or...

You could wake up in the Cumberland Mountains, step outside your door, and discover that your morning neighbors are goats. 🐐

You could drink your coffee while the chickens wander around doing whatever chickens do.

You might meet Susan Pork Chop, our free-range mini pig, who believes that all kitchen scraps belong to her.

You could see the barn cat breakfast buffet in all its cuteness.

And if you're lucky, you might catch us doing morning and evening chores while the herd loudly supervises every decision we make.

Then you can head back upstairs to The Herd House—our cozy two-bedroom farm stay above the barn—where you'll find mountain views, a comfortable place to relax, fresh farm eggs waiting for you, and a bar of our handmade goat milk soap made right here at Hidden Hilltop.

🐐🧔 HAPPY WORLD BEARD DAY! 🐐🧔

Everyone, please take a moment to appreciate Dippy, one of our Hidden Hilltop Dairy Queens and the proud owner of what can only be described as an EPIC lady beard.

That's right.

She's a girl. She has a beard.

And frankly, she wears it better than most men we know.

Dippy spends her days producing the rich, creamy milk that goes into our goat milk soap.....and apparently spends her evenings growing the most magnificent chin curtain on the hilltop.

Her responsibilities and titles are:

🐐📋 A STATEMENT FROM FARM MANAGEMENT 🐐📋

Pants has been made aware of the recent situation involving 2 and his missing bottle. (Please remember there are about 🧠🧠🧠 three brain cells between Pants and 2, and they're all on break.) His statement is as follows

"I would like everyone to remain calm. I am handling this. I know what 2 is going through because I was also a bottle baby. I understand the importance of babas.

You get a baba. You drink the baba. You are happy.

Then one day...

THEY TAKE THE BABA.

And they say:

“You're a big boy now.”

😐

WHAT?

What does being a big boy have to do with babas?

I got bigger. I still wanted babas.

Seems like a personal choice to me.

Now they're telling 2, as they told me, he has hay. And grain. And snacks. And occasional trees.

Apparently this is supposed to make up for the lack of babas.

It does not.

I had a McMeeting with 2 about this. It was a very important meeting.

We discussed the situation extensively.

Mostly, we stood next to each other and looked at the humans.

Then 2 yelled.

I agreed.

BABA GOOD. NO BABA BAD.

This is the kind of leadership you can expect from your Farm Manager.

I have decided that 2 deserves justice. I don't know what justice is.

But I am pretty sure it involves a baba. Possibly two. Maybe three.

Honestly, I think I might want a baba now too.

JUSTICE FOR 2. 🍼🐐

We will be accepting babas, snacks, and emotional support.

Actually, just bring snacks or babas.

We forgot what we were protesting about."

Every farm has drama.

Someone is yelling.
Someone is headbutting someone.
Someone is biting Pants’ stupid little ears or neckticles.
Someone is crying over the lack of bottles at feeding time. (2, we know, okay!)

And then there’s Sweet Magnolia.

Standing approximately 15 feet away from everyone else like:

👁️👄👁️
“That sounds like a y’all problem.”

Maggie has quickly established herself as the undisputed MASTER of minding her own business.

She doesn’t need to be involved.
She doesn’t WANT to be involved.
She would actually prefer that nobody even brief her on the situation.

While the rest of the Hidden Hilltop crew operates somewhere between mild chaos and a full-blown HR investigation, Maggie is off to the side quietly eating hay and protecting her peace.

We could all learn a little something from Maggie.

And honestly, Stacy and Cassie are quite jealous.😂

🚨🚨 PLEASE RESPECT OUR PRIVACY DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME 🚨🚨

Cue the SPCA commercial.

🎶 In the Arms of an Angel begins playing softly in the background… 🎶

We regret to inform everyone that 2 is being weaned off the bottle.

Yes.

His BABAS.

Please send thoughts, prayers, and possibly legal representation because, according to 2, this is abuse.

Never mind that this “tiny bottle baby” is now almost as big as Dippy, his stepmom/auntie/foster mom/whatever-we're-calling-her-today.

Never mind that he eats hay. Never mind that he eats grain.

Never mind that he browses around the farm like a perfectly capable young goat.

HE NEEDS HIS BABAS.

At least, that is the case he is currently presenting to management.

We have explained that he is a BIG BOY now.

Big boys eat hay. Big boys eat grain. Big boys do not need bottles forever.

2 respectfully disagrees.

Actually...

There was nothing respectful about it.

There are LOUD complaints.

There are LOUD protests.

There are dramatic looks.

So if you happen to drive past Hidden Hilltop and see the saddest little LaMancha boy in all of East Tennessee staring mournfully into the distance, please know:

He is safe.
He is fed.
He is loved.
He has hay.
He has grain.
He has snacks.

He just hasn't had his bottle.

And apparently, no goat in the history of goats has ever suffered more.

🐐 GOAT FACT FRIDAY 🐐

This week’s Goat Fact Friday features Violet, who would like everyone to know that she is conducting very important scientific research.

See that ridiculous face she's making? 😂

That is called the **Flehmen response**. A goat curls its upper lip, raises its head, and basically looks like it just smelled something questionable.

But Violet isn't disgusted.

She's investigating.

Goats have a specialized scent-detecting system called the **vomeronasal organ**, or Jacobson's organ, which helps them gather chemical information from scents and other substances.

And here's the fun part:

While bucks are especially well known for using scent during breeding season, the Flehmen response isn't just a boy-goat behavior. **Female goats do it too!**

During breeding season, scent becomes especially important. A buck's odor can communicate reproductive information to does and can even help stimulate reproductive activity—a phenomenon known as the "buck effect."

Violet and our other does use their amazing sense of smell and chemical detection system to gather information about their surroundings and the other goats around them, too.

So when you see a goat doing this:

👄 Upper lip curled
👃 Nose working overtime
👀 Looking like they've just discovered something VERY interesting...

They're basically saying: "Hang on. I need to analyze this."

And Violet takes her research VERY seriously.

What was she investigating?

Another goat?
The hay?
Something one of the humans did?

Who can say?

But one thing is certain:

The goats can for sure smell what's going on around here.

👃 Scent communication.
👄 Flehmen responses.
😂 And Violet minding everybody else's business.
