Cedar Meadows Farm

Cedar Meadows Farm We are a family farm in Ironsides, MD that provides a variety of farm-fresh products to our community. Message us to order/ schedule a time to pickup.

In order to provide the freshest product, we pick/bake to order. Cedar Meadows Farm is owned and operated by Elena and Matt Gilroy. Elena grew up on a farm in Nanjemoy, MD. She was very active in 4-H and raised rabbits, chickens, goats, and wool sheep. Matt also grew up around farms. He helped out on his grandparents farm raising cattle and working hard in the fields. Cedar Meadows Farm provides

quality heritage farm products to our community in order to promote the unique qualities of diverse agriculture, and to foster a knowledge of and appreciation for the agricultural traditions and heritage of rural Southern Maryland. We often post produce and other farm products for sale on our page, but we can take orders for the farm bakery or sell wool yarn and jams and jellies year-round. If you'd like to purchase anything, send a dm and we'll coordinate pickup or shipping. While we hope to eventually have a website, we currently coordinate most sales through Facebook. Keep in mind baked goods often require at least 24 hours notice. We use PayPal invoice (which you can pay with a credit card) and cash.

Getting all our first cutting hay in steadily now, but it sure is keeping us busy. We are always looking for some strong, hardworking young people to help get the hay out of the fields and into the barn, so feel free to send us a message if that's you!

This weekend has been busy-- we cut 4 fields of hay Friday, and then sent out a couple dozen cutout sugar cookies, some cupcakes, and this Hamilton themed cake Saturday, and this yummy marble cake with cookies and Cream icing is going out today.

The Hamilton cake was a fun challenge, as the inspiration cake photo was fondant, and we refuse to use fondant because we think it's gross.... so we had to make black and gold in icing-- which is complicated, and then stars out of melting chocolates. We think it turned out great, plus it was a great reason to listen to the Hamilton Soundtrack all weekend.

Here's how much we've gotten since the rain started Thursday night... and while it doesn't make up for the amount we're down from the drought, we can already see how happy it's making all of the plants!

How much rain have you gotten this week?

We knew it was bad, but now we're starting to see our drought yields. Hay season has officially started and we got about 15 bales off of a field that usually yields over 60.... so that's a 75% loss.... but the forecast shows rain the next 3 days, so we'll be saying an extra prayer that it comes our way!

Shroeder Shearing came back out to give our alpacas their annual haircuts and dental work.

We do the alpacas at a different time than the sheep just because the alpacas are more sensitive to the cold than the sheep are. (Plus it's easier on our shearer😅)
