Narrows Creek Garden and Greenhouse will offer started plants in the spring of 2015 with special focus on a large selection of pepper plants. We plan to offer garden produce, garden planters, eggs, Ameraucana and other Chicks, as well as Guineas and Ducks. I’ve been picking my tomatoes at the first sign of color and ripening them in a paper bag, but some of the green ones have been getting damaged—a nibble here, a bite there.

I set up a trail camera last night but caught nothing. Then today, in broad daylight, I went to the garden and found this guy sitting right in the middle of my tomato plants! He waited about 10 feet away while I fumbled for a bucket, pulled out my cell phone, and snapped a couple of photos and videos, as if he were just waiting for me to stop interrupting his breakfast.

I wouldn’t mind if he just grabbed a couple and took them home as carryout. But no! Nibble this one, bite that one… Who knew groundhogs liked tomatoes?

Aronia bushes are loaded with berries this year and color is starting to show. In Sauk County at one location we were at 1260 growing degree days over 50 degrees in 2025 and in 2026 we are at 1400, so the season is running a little ahead of last year maybe? We usually start picking aronia berries around the first of September. A patch of sweetcorn and the 853 BCS walk behind tractor that is helping me garden this year. I have several attachments including a flail mower, garden bed preparation attachments, and sickle mower. Why Northern Lights? Why a Barn?

Here is our gorgeous poster for the 10th Annual 2026 Hill & Valley Exploration Tour You will notice something unusual soaring above the Wisconsin barn: the Northern Lights.

The inspiration comes from the extraordinary northern lights during the winter of 2025–2026. Residents across Wisconsin were treated to some of the most spectacular aurora displays seen in decades. The sun is currently near the peak of its 11-year solar cycle, producing more solar flares and coronal mass ejections than usual. When those charged particles reached Earth, they create aurora displays visible far beyond their normal northern range—including across much of Wisconsin.

The Northern Lights are colorful because different gases in Earth’s atmosphere glow in different colors when energized by particles from the sun. Oxygen produces the familiar green light seen in most auroras, while higher-altitude oxygen can glow red. Nitrogen creates blue and violet hues and can contribute pink and magenta tones when conditions are especially strong. The result is the remarkable palette of colors that many of us witnessed over Wisconsin this past year

Our 2026 poster, created by the amazing local artist Peg Durkin, pairs a familiar Wisconsin barn with the aurora borealis—a combination that reflects both the everyday beauty and occasional surprises of life in the Driftless Region.

The Hill & Valley Exploration Tour celebrates the farms, artists, food producers, small businesses, historic sites, and communities that make Sauk, Richland, and Juneau Counties unique. We are grateful to Peg for creating an image that captures both the character of our rural landscape and the sense of possibility that draws people to explore it.

Narrows Creek Garden will have a very limited offering of white or purple violet and dandelion jelly at the Community Farmers Market this Thursday, 2 to 6 pm, just off main street in downtown Reedsburg, Wisconsin. The spring flowers are gone for now, so there will be no more after this is sold.
