Spring is such a beautiful, crazy time of year on the farm.

We have babies galore, crops that need to get in the ground, fences to fix to get cattle out to pasture, equipment to get fired up again- the list goes on and on!!

Some nights in farming are hard.

Exhausting.

Frustrating.

Sad.

There is a saying in farming that "Livestock means Deadstock", and while it's true, it's never an easy thing to swallow. Especially when it's not expected.

Yes. We raise animals knowing the ultimate purpose, but we put blood, sweat, tears, time, money, and love into them while we have them.

Tonight was no different, and despite all of my efforts on the floor of my kitchen to save one of our sweet little piglets, it just wasn't enough.

It's true, when there is life, there is also death; but farmers invest so much into their livestock, that every loss is more than just a number. It's a life that had meaning, value, and potentially consequences along with it.
