Quest Stop 9: Ton’s Drive-In Broussard

Ton’s is a tradition in Broussard. Great food. Community involvement. Just about every Acadiana town has a locally-owned spot like this, and Broussard is lucky to have Ton’s as their own.

The day we had our chili dog, Ton’s was pretty busy, and that may have contributed to the score.

Solid from start to finish. For us, the chili was a little “wetter” that we like. Of course, this is personal preference. It may be more to your liking than some that we scored higher. And that’s ok!

The bun and wiener were both good.

Unfortunately, our chili dog wasn’t as warm as it could have been. Again, we were happy to see Ton’s was busy and certainly will go back. But, on judgement day, temperature of the dog plays a small part in our overall score.

Would we recommend you try this one? Absolutely! Just not among the very best we have had so far.

Score (out of 5): 3.5 🌭

Quest stop number 8: Billeaud’s in Broussard

Sorry for the delay! We will get back to regular taste tests and posts moving forward.

Billeaud’s Grocery in Broussard is iconic. Back in the day, before Broussard exploded, Billeaud’s truly was THE store in the area. Fortunately, the community still supports this local treasure. There is hope in this world!

Sometimes, simple is perfect. The Billeaud’s chili dog is a great example. A traditional wiener, delicious homemade chili and a fresh hot dog bun.

This dog hits the spot! we think, in this case, the chili is a differentiating factor from this being just another chili dog.

Score (out of a possible 5): 🌭🌭🌭🌭

Stop 6 in the Chili Dog Quest: Emmy’s Ice Cream Bar in Broussard. It was recommended by multiple people.

Beginning to end, our visit to Emmy’s was as close to perfect as you can find.

The staff was super friendly. They took time to explain their products. One worker said that her dad grew up in New Iberia and that he said the Emmy Dog is really close to a Viator’s dog. That is a serious statement, so our expectations were high. For me (Hans), Viator’s is the standard. Nancy never had one, but she has heard me describe it multiple times!

I must say, her dad was right. This is the closest to a Viator’s dog I have had! The bun is a mini French bread bun made locally at Langlinais. It’s flaky, fresh and just the right size. The wiener is a Nathan’s dog, so you know it is excellent taste and quality. Then there’s the chili… it’s a secret recipe that is only known by a few people. And we understand why! Fantastic!!

Of course having delicious ice cream for dessert (we suggest Zanzibar) was an added bonus.

We will be back. Soon. And we are looking forward to enjoying the second location of Emmy’s on E. Broussard.

Score (out of 5): 🌭 🌭 🌭 🌭 🌭
