One moment of bravery can change your life! Years ago I went to look at a goat in milk on a commercial farm and all the goats ran away from me except one little white kid that walked right up and shadowed me the whole time. I was there for a totally different animal and ended up buying that little goat and now about a decade later here she sits. The retired herd queen that gets extra feed and attention daily. She doesn’t even have to earn her keep anymore. Just lays in the sun chewing.

Never in my lifetime did I think I would see a pure Ameraucana hen actually hatch out a chick!
Happened here! I would say they are very happy with the newest setup. Chicken coop 9.0 or 10.0 (I honestly don’t know at this point)

*Real Ameraucana are not a “broody” type. Every once in a while you get a line that some go broody for a second but easily give up the second it’s inconvenient. As you can tell by the face this is an older hen so that’s a factor too.

So exciting!!!! After years of trying to work with nature and mimic a more natural prairie/pasture mix we are starting to see nature return to our little patch. Also helps that there’s still a few small patches of hay field around us. But this year we even have a little blue heron living between our back pasture and a hay field two lots over!!!!
