Honey in the Rock Farm In June 2024, our prayers were answered, and Honey in the Rock Farm became a reality.

Our goal is to create a homestead where we can honor God through working the land and raising animals for our family and community.

Summer is winding down. The Naked Ladies (aka surprise lilies) are back! Who knew such a pretty flower could smell bad?! Rue loves to chill under one of the wood rack and our two turkeys are huge, especially this guy.

Who has crazy chickens? This chicken got on top of our old coop that has a hole in the roof and then went inside it! 🤣

Turkeys are getting really big. They will make a great Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Had to pull all the potatoes even though they weren’t all ready due to fungus gnat larvae eating them. The weather has just been too weird this year and my garden isn’t doing great. But happy with what I have gotten.

Everyone talks about how hard farming is in the rainy, muddy season and in the freezing cold season but I don’t see a lot talk about death ray season of summer. At 10:30 am it is 96 degrees with an index much, much higher. I’m not sure which of these three seasons is the worst in farming. While we do our best to keep the animals cool, the chickens, turkeys, and cats are all panting. The sheep are hiding from the sun under their shade. And us farmers are drenched in sweat the moment we step outside, trying to breathe through the humidity, to give our animals a good life. It is not an easy life but it is a good one!

We have had chickens for 6 years and never encountered a racc**n. Until this week. Even left his evidence on our burn barrel. Sadly we have lost two chickens so far. I know they are farm animals but when they are lost to predators it breaks my heart. We have temporary fix in place that keeps the chickens protected until we can permanently fix things but this c**n has to go. Tried to trap it last night but it stole the bait without getting caught. We will try again tonight. Any tips?

What do you with eggs that are getting old? We use them in our garden, feed to our dogs and boil up for the chickens!
