Chronicles of MagnaWave: Money’s story.
As many of our “Top Fans” probably know, my oldest daughter had a gilt in her last LSU set. Money was her show pig, but she was also her showmanship animal.
They had practiced for hours. They worked on everything together—hitting their holes, staying on pace, keeping her moving, and learning how to work together in the ring.
And during their LSU showmanship class, they were on fire. Money was moving. Mackenzie was working. They were hitting their holes and keeping pace, even with a bigger gilt who could get tired quickly.
The judge narrowed it down to his top two.
Mackenzie and another young man.
And then, it happened.
Watching from the sidelines, it felt like everything went into slow motion.
Money took a step and screamed.
Mackenzie looked down, and there it was—a huge knot of wood right where Money had stepped.
Mackenzie immediately bent down, threw the piece out of the ring, and tried to get Money moving again.
She couldn’t.
I couldn’t hear a single thing the judge was saying. At that point, all I could see was Mackenzie and Money.
They both knew something was wrong. Somehow, they made it back to the pen. I’m pretty sure Kalen helped them the last few steps.
We started MagnaWave sessions, but I knew something else, too.
Money needed time.
And time wasn’t really on our side. She was scheduled to show the next day.
So as a family, we made one of the hardest decisions we could make.
We scratched her.
Could that judge have loved her the next day? Maybe.
Could the gilt who had just walked around that showmanship ring like she owned it have done really well? I think so.
But we’ll never know.
Because Money needed time to heal. And the bigger goal wasn’t one show. It was getting her home.
We wanted to give her the chance to become a mom.
So that’s what we did.
We took her home, continued with her MagnaWave sessions, gave her the time she needed, and slowly watched her get back on her feet and become sounder than we ever thought she would.
There were still some bumps along the way. But Money eventually got pregnant.
Mission accomplished. ✅
And that’s something I always want people to understand about MagnaWave.
It isn’t a cure-all.
Sometimes injuries happen. Sometimes you wish you had more time, but you don’t. Our job is to be good stewards of these animals and make the decision that’s best for them—not just for the next show, but for the long haul.
Sometimes that means scratching. Sometimes it means giving them time. And sometimes, the biggest win isn’t a banner at all. Sometimes it’s getting them home. 🫶
