It’s been such a treat to have this day off, sleep late, and resist every temptation to work on the farm…though I must confess, I did harvest poppies and water plug trays. Mostly, I just had the time to process all the happening on the farm over the last month.
Three big things happened over the past 4 weeks….Mothers Day, for which we are deeply grateful to all of our dear friends and customers who came out and chose to purchase flowers from local growers! We are so thankful for all the flower love and support, whether you bought bouquets from or from the multitude of local growers in the Hudson Valley and beyond. We thank you, and we all exist because of you. 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
Second big thing, we survived the tulip apocalypse, the extreme weather that passed though mid-April, from 4-day heat wave to record-breaking frost, that destroyed thousands of late-season tulips but left us with enough to make it through Mother’s Day.
Third big thing, and the one that saved the tulips—hiring our new crew members for the 2026 season! Allie and Jocelyn joined our team in mid-April, alongside me and Jodi, and their first day was the day the heat wave set in! Out the window went onboarding, and off we all went to Operation Save the Tulips!
For tbe new crew, that meant pulling up as much as we could, as fast as we could, anything in or near bloom and with a crack of color. With 10,000 tulips in the ground, that also meant working non-stop all week because every time we thought we caught up and got them all, we’d blink and a whole new section of tulips would pop open, I’d never seen anything like it, but Jodi, Allie and Jocelyn worked with tireless energy and focus to get those tulips out of the ground, labelled and to the coolers for market and Mother’s Day. And the following week, they stripped leaves, removed bulbs, and processed flowers like pros, every day for hours. I like to think of them as the Mother’s Day supersheros that saved the tulips! It would have been impossible to do all of that work solo, and we’re so thankful for the team—Jodi, Allie and Jocelyn—for rising to the challenge and the unpredictability of modern-day farming! 🙏🏼💪🙌🏼
