Yes, I wash my cast-iron with soap.

Modern dish soap is safe for a well-seasoned cast-iron pan and helps remove the grease and food residue. You don't want hanging around.

The real enemy? Moisture. I dry mine thoroughly after washing, then rub in a very thin layer of coconut oil to help protect it from rust.

Simple, clean, and ready for whatever I'm cooking next.

Sloppy Joe's were always on our Labor Day menu growing up, along with macaroni salad, and carrot sticks.

I still make the same meal today and it is the only sloppy Joe's recipe you'll ever need!

Here's my recipe:
Homemade Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 yellow onion, diced
1 large red bell pepper, diced
¼ cup brown sugar
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
¼ cup ketchup
1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon hot sauce (I always prefer Frank's Hot Sauce)
2 cups crushed tomatoes
1 pound ground sirloin
1 pound ground pork
Seasoned salt and black pepper to taste

1. Saute onion and bell pepper in olive oil until onion starts to become translucent, 2-3 minutes. Add meat and sprinkle over seasoned salt and pepper. Cook until no pink remains. Drain fat.
2. Add brown sugar over meat and stir. Add crushed tomatoes, ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce. Stir to combine.
3. Let simmer for 10 minutes. Add more seasoned salt and pepper if needed.

It's WIP Wednesday. Let's see what's new and what I'm working on!

My favorite 2-second meal upgrade.

Fresh basil, olive oil makes even the simplest meal taste a little more special. Drizzle it over pasta, tomatoes, grilled vegetables, chicken, eggs – honestly, just about anything.

And it's one of my favorite ways to use up fresh basil before it goes bad.

Save this one for the next time you have basil hanging around your kitchen!

A $100 look for less than $12.

Four Dollar Store chargers, black-and-white fabric and a little spray adhesive completely changed this table – and I made all four in under 15 minutes.

Save this one for your next tablescape. You can change the fabric and make them work for any season or occasion.

A little Sunday prep goes a long way. I prep the ingredients, so weekday lunches are quick, easy, and whatever I'm in the mood for that day. And at 5:30 AM, I'm always grateful I did.

Take your dip outside.

This jalapeño cilantro dip is creamy, a little spicy, and ridiculously easy to make.

And yes, I consider myself a chip connoisseur. The Graza olive oil chips are exceptional.

Ingredients:
Pickled jalapeños, chopped
1/4 cup cilantro chopped fine
4 ounces whipped cream cheese
1/4 cup sour cream
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste

Save this one for your next picnic or outing!

Mini Apple Galettes - everyone gets their own.

These look bakery-made, and puff pastry does most of the work. And my little Nilla Wafer trick helps absorb the apple juices so the bottoms stay beautifully crisp.

INGREDIENTS:
Puff pastry
2 peeled Granny Smith apples, sliced thinly
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 handful Nilla Wafers, crushed
Powdered sugar for finishing

Brush the edges with an egg wash. Bake in a 400° oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Save this recipe for fall entertaining!

Saving summer tomatoes for January.

This is one of my favorite ways to preserve the garden harvest. I have and see the plum tomatoes, leave the the Sungolds whole, then roast them with garlic, tomato paste, olive oil, and salt until jammy and caramelized.

Once cooled, into the freezer, they go – ready to add that summer tomato flavor to homemade soups and sauces all winter long.

Save this tip now, during tomato season!
