In a feat of real escapism, the goats, who were in the shelter under the old maple, narrowly escaped being crushed by the tree. Frederi took the tractor and carefully extracted them as they were unable to get out! We feel very lucky no sheep or goats were injured or killed….

Chinook’s Acres has welcomed 6 new lambs in the past 36 hours- 5 Shetland and 1 Kerry Hill. They are all ewes. What are the chances of that?? All are AI lambs (artificial insemination!) with semen from the UK.

Welcome little lambs!!

Our friend Mariana asked Frederi how the farm and animals are - below is his unexpectedly long-winded meandering reply!!

The dead of winter is a hard time at the farm sometimes, as Carolyn will tell you. For the most part, all the animals are doing great, since we started buying hay from one of our friends who does high-moisture wrapped round bales. Carolyn was worried about the ducks not getting enough food, but they turn up their nose at hen food, they prefer dog food! I made a better enclosure for Eloise the donkey, so this is good, because she was getting bullied by Duncan the ram, who is one third her size. Lemon goes through life as if time does not exist, and we are all there to serve her. She seems as healthy today at age 18 as she did when she was 4 years old, and is still occasionally laying eggs (though it’s better to prevent that). Keep in mind that the world’s oldest land-dwelling mother with a newborn, by far, was Wisdom the Laysan Albatross on Midway Atoll, who is at least 73 years old today, and was documented as hatching a healthy chick as late as February 2021, at age 70: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_(albatross). This also makes Wisdom the oldest known wild bird. The Wikipedia page states that she had flown over 3 million miles in her lifetime. Lemon, for her part, does not fly far; she knows what she wants, and knows how to tell us, and she always gets what she wants. The border collies still can’t figure her out at all, and can spend hours staring at her, which she simply ignores. The Pyrenees are big and strong with thick coats; occasionally a fight breaks out, but, knock on wood, they never intend to harm, only to scare. That’s part of their job. These dogs love the snow. The poor cats are fine, but rarely get out of the garage because our tiny border collie Breeze harasses them, even though she knows very well that she should not, and she tries to convince herself not to. She’s a good girl, very smart, very biddable, but she’s busy-minded, as her breeder told us. The hens are fine. They don’t love the deep snow, but we still get one or two eggs per day, even though we don’t force them to lay eggs by keeping them indoors with the lights on. Our wild songbirds do well since there are plenty of scraps of food to pick every day. They just need to make sure to stay out of the garage!

Chinook’s Acres | Laingsburg, MI

Chinook's Acres is an 80-acre farm located close to Laingsburg, Michigan. We are a small family farm and to say that we are passionate about our creatures is an understatement. Our chickens, goats, and sheep roam the pastures, grazing on the grass, trees, and bushes that grow here. The barn doors are always open so they can retreat to the barn to munch on hay and keep an eye on the weather and return to the pastures when they choose. They are guarded by our Great Pyrenees dogs, Chinook and Simoun, who love their jobs. Our farm is well managed by Misty, our treasured Border Collie.
