Happy Spring! On Saturday, April 25 from 1-4 pm, we are looking for people who would like to help us plant bare root trees and shrubs, willow cuttings, and hazelnut seeds around the farm. In exchange, we can teach a bit about these plants and planting processes, and we expect to have extras of some plants for folks to take home. The event will be entirely outside. All ages are welcome, as are leashed dogs. Please RSVP by 4/22 if you would like to join us by filling out this brief form: https://forms.gle/DDM3VUBkAUBFvAc4A

Let us know if you have any questions. I hope you are getting excited for Spring and that some of you can enjoy an afternoon with us soon!

Greetings! It’s been a while…we’ve been focused on supporting our local community and wrapping up our hazel coppice craft research project. Amazing how quickly the last three years have gone by. We’ve learned so much and have a lot to share. Check out the Coppice Craft page of our website for videos on how to make crafts and all data collected during the project: https://www.ninehazelsfarm.com/coppice-craft
Excited to share about all this at next week’s Savanna Institute Perennial Farm Gathering! So grateful to Minnesota Department of Agriculture for funding the project and for everyone who has connected with and supported this work! Let’s “stick” together 💚

Yesterday, Paul made a special delivery to the State Capitol! Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Minnesota Grown asked if we could make mini wreaths as ornaments for the capitol tree. Paul got to help decorate, meet Speaker of the House Lisa Demuth and MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen, and share the story of Minnesota hazelnuts at the bipartisan decorating event. Honored to be featured alongside Pluck Flower Farm and Turcks Trees and delighted to learn that this year's tree was produced via stump culture, a technique similar to coppicing 💚

Excited to teach a day-long course at Women's Environmental Institute next month! Join us Saturday, November 15th 10:30am-4:00pm to learn a great deal about how to grow, harvest, and process hazelnuts. Scholarships are available, and all are welcome!

We still have a handful of wonderful classes coming up this fall, including an introduction to an up-and-coming perennial food crop in the Upper Midwest: Hazelnuts! Join Paul Mairet of Nine Hazels Farm on Saturday, November 15 to learn all about this versatile, productive, and ecologically restorative shrub. Plus, the class includes a crafting component using the flexible coppiced hazel branches to create a wreath or other item. Register now if you're interested in joining us.

On Saturday, November 8th from 12-4, we invite you to join us for an afternoon of coppicing and crafting with hybrid hazels! Paul will share what he has learned about the potential value and uses of hybrid hazel wood and then demonstrate how to properly coppice and prepare stems for crafting. The rest of the afternoon will be an open coppice, craft, and social time. Please bring or be prepared to share loppers and hand pruners and refrain from bringing power tools. The event will be entirely outside, but we will have a fire, cider, and tea to keep us warm. If you follow our instructions and clean up after yourself, all stems you cut during this event are yours for free! We're so grateful to Minnesota Department of Agriculture for funding this project and wanted to pay it forward a bit! Please register for the event by filling out this form by November 1st: https://forms.gle/nz1pGKjkYPmWqAoH9

Finished de-husking our hybrid hazel seed and harvesting hybrid chestnuts this week! Our older chestnut is producing more each year, over 100 nuts this year. Excited to grow these out and introduce them as a nursery offering next year. The six bags of hazelnuts are each from single plants, between 3 and nearly 4 lbs each. Three are part of this year's seed offering and three will be grown out here for seedling sales and our own planting projects. The two bags are from plants that essentially tied for top producer this year, both tipping the scale just over 4 lbs! These will be grown out here for sale and planting too. All eight hazels pictured produced well or very well last year. Very pleased to have good rain two years in a row and to start refining our understanding of the farm's consistently productive plants.

Wrapped up hazelnut harvest this weekend! We'll share a few posts in the coming weeks, starting with a video. This plant was part of our seed offering last year. Happy to see it producing really well again!

We have been working with Climate Land Leaders for several years. An impactful nonprofit, they have connected us with a wealth of information and a community of like minds to discuss how we can work towards a resilient future. They have also supported us with stipends for our management and planting of trees and shrubs, a great way to mitigate climate change. Paul was recently appointed to the board of directors, an exciting growth opportunity for him and all the more reason to contribute to their silent auction fundraiser with this hazel wood tray. You can bid on it and many other wonderful items at the link below. Thanks for considering!

Greatly appreciate the opportunity to talk alongside William DellaCamera about Farm Aid, the challenges farmers are facing, and what we need in these uncertain times. Thank you, NewsNation for having us on the show. The live show went a little longer than this clip. My main thoughts: we need expanded not defunded local food purchase assistance programs and investment in perennial agriculture 🌳
