Hello friends of “The Dixon Zoo”! I want to thank you for liking and following our page. Here on the homestead our dreams are growing and we are planning bigger things. Coming soon to our 16-acre family farm here in Lake Cormorant, we present to you Dixon Acres. We have been working hard praying, planning, making investments, planting, growing, and dreaming of what Dixon Acres can bring to YOU and our community. We have decided it is Happiness! We will be Harvesting bouquets of Happiness to share with you. Over the next year (and many years to come) we will have a beautiful Flower Field overflowing with flowers of more colors, shapes, and sizes than your heart can even imagine, a Drive Up Flower Stand where you can stop by and quickly pick up a $20 bouquet of fresh cut flowers, regular U-Pick Flower events for groups and individuals, you can easily design your own Wedding Flowers with our Flowers by the Bucket packages, we will have some fun Bouquet Bootcamp Classes where you can pick your own flowers and join us in our shop stocked with everything you need to take home an amazing centerpiece to brighten your home. We will also have Dixon Acres Farm Fresh Honey made right here on the farm by our own bees, Freshly Harvested Vegetables, Mini Photo Session Opportunities, Fresh Eggs, a fun Gift Shop, and more.

The chickens have been in the coop since the end of October. Today, the beautiful weather allowed for the opportunity to do a deep clean. Our coop and run was originally what looked to be kennels for hunting dogs. The concrete floor made the cleanup easier. Once I shoveled out the old pine shavings and swept it out, I used the blower to get the rest. After the floor dried out I spread a layer of agricultural lime before adding new pine shavings. At least one hen has started laying this week, so I opened up the nesting boxes and put some fake eggs in them so the girls would know this is the place to lay eggs. Hope to give the run a good cleaning this week and maybe even finish painting the exterior.

Our girl Jolene had FHO surgery this week. She is being a trooper. If you are not familiar with this procedure in dogs, look it up. It just blows my mind. Her femoral head has been cut off and she will eventually have use of this leg without the assistance of a hip joint.

I think it’s time to start observing any differences in these girls so we can start naming them. I think I want to use names of characters in my favorite movies and TV shows.
So far the only one named is “Ricky Bobby”.
