Welcome to Whippletree! Our family established this farm in 1869 and it has been in continuous agricultural production ever since. Our great-great grandparents were simple subsistence farmers to start, and grew into a dairy farm like many of the other farms in the Lake Elmo and Stillwater area.
Our family is proud to be the fifth and sixth generations to live on the farm. We’re slowly and surely transitioning to eggs, honey, hops fruits, berries and other perennial food crops. We seasonally offer these food items at our wayside stand right on the farm. Stop by for a visit!
We believe in connection and community. It is important for consumers to know what they are eating and to know where their food comes from. Sometimes, just like with clean drinking water, we may take clean, accessible food for granted. We are proud to open our family operation to you for learning about food production. Being apart of our community so people can have a connection to their food in some small way is a part of our mission.
We believe in land stewardship. We view ourselves as caretakers, not owners, of the land. The simple fact is that people lived on and honored this land long before our family established the farm, and it will be here long after. We are doing what we can to maintain and enhance the land. This includes using very little to no pesticide and herbicides, using sustainable grazing to maintain the oak savanna meadow, building the soil and planting native trees, grasses and flowers in buffer strips for biodiversity.
We believe clean, healthy food is important. We strive to keep our food and animals as healthy as possible. For the eggs and chickens we produce, this means:
Our layers are fed Certified Organic grains as their main food source. Typically we buy down the road at Houle’s.
When weather allows, the chickens are raised on fresh grass by moving our mobile coops every few days to new grass. They get a wider range of food and fresh air and sun. During the winter months, they go in the barn, but still with access to the outdoors.
We keep a variety of breeds that are good layers, have calm dispositions and typically have close-cropped combs, which is better for the winter months. You’ll notice different color eggs, but there should be no difference in quality or nutrition, as they are all fed and raised the same.
We strive to have our eggs inspected, packed and ready for sale within the day of being laid. The freshness of eggs that you’ll find in our cooler is impossible to find with regular store-bought eggs!
All of our eggs are inspected, graded and cleaned to regulations. They will always be AA Grade.
Where To Purchase
We sell eggs and other seasonal products right at the farm, 9130 55th St N, Lake Elmo, MN 55042. If the red & yellow flag on the barn is up, we should have eggs in stock. Drive part way up the driveway and find the temperature-controlled container on the deck of the barn. Most often we stock Extra Large for $5.00 a dozen, and sometimes we have Large sized as well.
