Trust is such a key to working with these wild ones. Makila is food possessive and a hoarder. Sweet, huh?

There was such value in the idea of “Free to be You and Me.” Unless we embrace, respect and value authenticity in ourselves and each other we could shrink ourselves into a life of business for the benefit of others. 💔

In the deserts of eastern Utah, beavers that flood basements or block culverts are normally trapped and killed. In 2019 a team led by graduate student Emma Doden tried the reverse, releasing 47 of these condemned animals into the Price and San Rafael rivers, both so drained by dams and drought that native fish could barely spawn.

Moving a beaver is risky, because they waddle slowly on land and make easy prey once away from water. Just under 40 percent of the relocated animals survived, against about 80 percent of resident beavers. The ones that stayed felled branches and packed mud into dams that backed water up and spread it across the dry floodplain.

Crews also built beaver dam analogs, rustic lattices of wooden beams that give newcomers cover from predators. Water pooled behind the structures where little had gathered before, rebuilding habitat that three vanishing fish species depend on.
