If you’ve ever heard your English saddle described as a medium-wide, etc or western saddles described as Semi-QH bars etc., its our way of trying to understand the somewhat overwhelming of idea of matching your horse’s shape to the shape of the saddle! This has often been a quest of a lifetime for some hard to fit horses but if you understand better what you’re lining up, you can come one step closer to comfort under saddle!
Whether in Western or English disciplines, you must evaluate and select your (1) gullet width and (2) the shape of your horse’s shoulders. The vocabulary and equipment is slightly different, but the idea is the same -you must match your horse’s shape to the saddle’s shape!
This is why it’s so important to hire a qualified saddle fitter to help guide you toward the right choice, and not just send you down the road of shopping for a generic saddle.
Who knew almost 30 years later, I’d be studying Geometry once again…Lucky for my clients, it was the one subject in math I was good at! Please message me to set up your fitting today!
