Bee update and special honey! Rochester Farmers market this Saturday!
This season has been amazing! Despite fewer hives, the harvest thrived thanks to good temps and timely rain, yielding healthy bees and strong nectar flows. Many hives produced over 100 pounds of honey—impressive, right? Note: When we pull 100 pounds, we leave 30–50 pounds for the bees, and they store another 50 post-pull. They likely consume 100 pounds during the season too, meaning a strong hive makes 200–300 pounds total—we just take a portion!
Bee Health:
Overall, bee health is solid. Hot weather delayed mite treatments, but the first rounds of Formic Pro and Varroxsan are done. Another round in a few weeks will keep mites (Varroa destructor) in check for winter. Right now, hives are raising winter bees—fatter, longer-lived bees that will sustain the queen and cluster through the cold. Strong, healthy winter bees are crucial now for survival!
Honey Pull Challenges:
The main honey pull was tough—my helper bailed, so I moved thousands of pounds solo in a 94-degree heat wave. Not complaining, but I’m seeking part-time help next season (3–8 hours/week) to fill honey jars, other bee stuff and to move boxes in a bee suit. Interested? Let’s chat! :)
Big Move Ahead:
We’re relocating from Lake Orion to Brandon Township this spring, aiming to condense to 2–3 apiary sites. Know of 1–2 properties near Brandon/Ortonville for 50 hives each? Drop me a lead!
New Honey Offering:
RAW SELECT – Ultra Raw Honey
Exciting news! We’ve got limited spring/early summer honey—pulled a little later than last year’s spring flow, and it’s the best I’ve tasted! Unlike our usual raw honey, this ultra-raw batch skips screening (no heat or filtering ever), leaving some small wax particles and a slightly cloudy look due to some natural crystallization. It’s a lighter honey with a unique, pleasant taste, preserved in 12 oz., 45 oz. and 190 oz. glass jars (no plastic squeeze bottles for this precious “liquid sunshine”). Available only on our website or at my in-person markets. Sales will determine its future—give it a try!
Thank you all!
Blessings!
