Heading to Alto Adige Italy tomorrow to sample one of the most interesting regions for white varietals in the world. Grown high on the mountain slopes to maximize sun exposure, this region is also one of Italy's driest with ancient grape growing tradition going back to Roman times, (gewurztraminer, pinot gris, chardonnay, pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, kerner and riesling) as well as the dominant red varietals (schiava, lagrein and pinot noir). A fascinating and complex mosaic of grapes, history and terroir. Hope to find some good ones to import!
