Dark Hammock Legacy Ranch

Dark Hammock Legacy Ranch Welcome to Dark Hammock Legacy Ranch, a beef cattle operation, beautiful retreat, wedding event venue, and a unique part of Florida's heritage.

A gentle breeze flutters through the leaves of 200-year-old granddaddy oaks draped with Spanish Moss. The sun peeks through the leaves of the oaks, tall palmettos and pines. As visitors here take in the natural beauty surrounding them, they realize they’ve left behind that white background noise that is so big a part of our culture. They have entered virgin land: Undisturbed, pristine Florida coun

tryside where cattle roam green pastures. Here, they get a glimpse what life was like 200 years ago when this was a land virtually without fences. When cattlemen made this part of central western Highland County an overnight destination. It was here, under a thick oak hammock that the pioneers could bed down for the night, their cattle safe in a corral. They didn’t have to take four-hour shifts to calm the cattle; everyone could get a good night sleep. Today the property is called Dark Hammock Legacy Ranch, named after the oak hammock. And it still is a place of rest. Today it is a destination for those who long for the tranquility of a country refuge, far from the noise of interstate traffic.

Concerned about your carbon footprint when choosing grass-fed beef for your family? Research shows that carbon sequestration in pasture grasslands could lower the carbon footprint of grass-finished beef, as opposed to conventionally-raised beef. Beyond carbon, our ranch offers real environmental benefits, like protecting water quality, building soil health, and maintaining wildlife habitat. We commit to producing beef that's delicious and nutritious, while sustaining the land as caretakers for years to come. Purchase from your local farm today: https://dh-lr.com/grass-fed-beef

Today’s beef cattle are bigger than they were a generation ago, and according to Kansas State University experts, that shift may represent more than a passing cycle in the cattle industry. As producers face rising costs, changing technologies and evolving market demands, larger carcass weights are increasingly becoming part of the industry’s approach to efficiency and profitability.

K-State Beef Cattle Institute experts discuss why larger cattle and heavier carcass weights may be the “new normal” in the beef industry.

You've probably seen "organic" labels at the grocery store, but what do they actually mean? For beef to be labeled USDA organic, cattle must be raised in conditions that accommodate their natural tendencies (like pasture grazing), fed 100 percent organic feed and forage, and never given antibiotics or hormones. It's a rigorous, expensive certification process. Many quality ranches practice sustainable, antibiotic-free ranching without formal organic certification. When shopping, look for transparency about farming practices, just like you see at farms like ours. Get your homegrown beef today: https://dh-lr.com/grass-fed-beef

Limpograss (Hemarthria altissima) has a longer season of growth than Bahiagrass or Bermudagrass, so it can help cattle ranchers and dairy farmers bridge the gap between summer perennial grasses and winter annual forages. Limpograss can also be stockpiled, and strip grazed to reduce the need for hay feeding from October through mid-January. Limpograss is also more tolerant of poorly drained soils than either of our traditional summer perennial grasses.

Spring fever, grass fever, and stocker fever are the trifecta of fevers that can either bring prosperity or put a person down for the count. Spring fever is an ailment commonly occurring in people who work indoors, but it can infect those with professions that work outdoors, behind a steering wheel, or even those who do not work, though it is less prevalent in the latter. Spring fever in cattle producers largely is associated with fertilizing and spraying pastures and hay fields and rounding up rogue cattle that have found a hole in the fence...

Body condition score (BCS) at calving is one of the best predictors of reproductive performance in beef cows. The period between calving and rebreeding is the most nutritionally demanding stage of production because nutrient requirements are at their greatest due to lactation and peak milk production. When energy intake does not meet energy demand, cows must rely on body energy reserves (fat stores) to make up the deficit.

Separate thin cows from those in adequate body condition to help manage nutrition and allocate feed resources.
