Harvested the rest of my wild lettuce today! I have Canada Wild Lettuce & Tall Blue Wild Lettuce. I had aleady harvested early leaves to go into my cold & flu tea, so today I made a tincture. It is (not regulated or FDA approved) but in my opinion it is really good at helping decrease pain caused by nerves or inflammation. (Like neuropathy &/or arthritis).
To make it, you harvest the plant after 100% correctly identying it. (Oxidizing "milk" when cut is a good indicator you are on the right track). I personally don't wash or rince for personal reasons about freshness being bestness - but you absolutely can. I then cut into pieces and crunch the leaves into a jar. I pour an alcohol, over 80 proof, over the leaves. I then press the leaves until they are full submerged, leaving about 1/2 inch. I keep it submerged with pickling weights. It'll sit about 8 weeks in a cool dark place. Wild Lettuce will turn the alcohol milky as the resin is drawn out. Strain this well. I use tightly woven cheese cloth. Lettuce potentcy varies from plant to plant for a variety of reasons, & you can over toxify yourself with Wild lettuce....so always start with 1-2 drops & test it until you find what works for you. Always check any medicine or health conditions that wouldn't work with Wild Lettuce. (A common one being latex allergy). Again I just share what I do in my own home apothecary, I'm not encouraging anyone else to try it, & I don't sell it. (Note: minimal of 80proof alcohol is required to make tincture shelf stable, Wild Lettuce has a lot of water that can dilute the alcohol, so to ensure it's shelf stable, I use a high proof. I use rum for Wild Lettuce (even though Vodka is standard) because Wild Lettuce in incredibly bitter, & rum (I also mix it with local raw honey for serving) helps tame that bitter flavor.)

My Mullein 🩷 They are 2 years old plants & I already have Mullein Tincture & tea made for cold & flu season. I don't have a need for anymore leaves, so I'll let it go to seed & plant year 1 plants next year.(They are biannual)

Harvested soime young celery to allow the bigger stalks to grow. I'm dehydrating the leaves to powder into seasoning that will be a base for cream of celery soup mix & celery salt. The stems will be part of my dried soup mix (i mix legumes, rice, dehydrated veggies & herbs for a quck & easy meal. )
My zucchini plant is 4 feet tall! & im already getting decent zucchini growing! My potatoes are about 3feet tall WAY more than last year. (I 100% swear my composted goat bedding is the #1 organic fertilizer ever!! ) I put it where all of the producing plants are growing, even out by the grapes & fruit trees! The herbs are going crazy, the tomatoes & peppers have flowered, the cucumber is flowering & crawling everywhere! Blessed with the lord's provision & greatful for it. 🤗

We laid one of our sweet hens to rest under the apple tree today. She was a beautiful 3-year-old Olive Egger.

Chickens are incredibly hardy and resilient—until they aren't. Despite having multiple fans running, deep shade, and constant access to fresh, cool water, the recent combination of intense storms and sweltering summer heat was simply too much for her. She had stopped laying this past winter, and our observations point to an underlying heart condition that was ultimately exacerbated by the extreme weather. Sometimes, despite our absolute best efforts, it is just their time.

To my fellow homesteaders: please remember that losing an animal is not a sign of failure or neglect. We pour our hearts into keeping them safe, healthy, and comfortable, but we cannot control everything.

Rest easy, sweet girl. 🌿🤍

Cold/Flu Tea - making this for my personal apothecary cabinet! Mullein, 2x Wild Lettuce, & Mint.
Mullein is a decongestant & soothes respiratory distress (I already made a Mullein Tincture as a base for cough medication).
Wild Lettuce is great for relieving aches/pains & it is anti-anxiety & helps sleep.
Mint gives it a good flavor & is soothing to the digestive tract.
I grow all 3 plants in my yard organically. I am not selling this tea blend yet, because I do not have enough quantity, but I will be harvesting the seeds from Mullein & both my Canadian Wild Lettuce & Tall Blue Wild Lettuce. They are biannual plants and I'll plant them this fall as all of my current plants are 2nd year plants. My mint grows crazy every year, so itll be easy to keep up with that!
I do have my signature "Backyard Blend " tea available with Clover, Plantain (Wide & Narrow), Black Medic, Creeping Woodsorrel, Dandelion, & Pineapple W**d.
I also make many other hand crafted loose teas.

Headed off for a week long offroading camping trip tomorrow, & made some Chelle's Shells famous granola for quick snacks on the go!

BBQ - This customer favorite is made with sourdough, steel cut oats, almonds, & Chelle's Shells proprietary spicy BBQ seasoning. I added a bit of liquid smoke, parmesan cheese, & dried jalapeño for extra spiciness! I mix in dried tart cherries for a well rounded sweet/spicy/savory snack!

KITCHEN SINK - I had a lot of extra ingredients that weren't enough for full recipes, so I blended them all together & it turned out delicious! Sourdough, steel cut oats, local honey , coconut, pecans, vanilla, & cinnamon sprinkled with dried mango, banana, & apples - added some Semi-Sweet chocolate chips for extra sweetness. Perfect for a quck breakfast or a campfire sittin' dessert!
