Food waste is an urban challenge. 🍽️
Every year, an estimated 1.05 billion tonnes of food are wasted globally. Beyond what ends up in the bin, this means valuable land, water and energy are used to produce food that is never eaten, while food loss and waste contribute an estimated 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Preventing food waste can save resources, reduce emissions and support more resilient and equitable urban food systems. It can also ease pressure on municipal waste services and create opportunities for food redistribution, composting and more circular approaches in our cities and communities.
Ahead of on 20 September, it’s time to rethink what we throw away. This year, under the theme “From clean plates to clean cities,” we are going beyond cleanup to address food waste at its source and encourage action across households, businesses, communities and cities.

Did you know: A healthy diet is still out of reach for 1 in 3 people worldwide.
Obesity is rising, and progress on maternal and child nutrition has stalled.

Here's what works:
Making healthy food affordable and accessible
Supporting breastfeeding
Requiring clear front-of-pack labels
Taxing unhealthy products

Soil degradation is continuing to worsen in many parts of the world, while proven practices to protect and restore soils are still not being adopted at the pace and scale required, according to a major new global FAO assessment.

The Status of the World's Soil Resources 2026 report, alongside new guidance developed jointly with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, was presented at the seventeenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the . Together, the two publications combine new evidence on the state of the world's soils with practical guidance to accelerate action and help countries avoid, reduce and reverse agricultural land and soil degradation.

“We have much better evidence today about the pressures facing the world’s soils — and about the practices that can protect and restore them. But this report makes clear that proven solutions are still not being adopted at the pace and scale required. The priority now is to give countries, farmers and other land users the knowledge, capacity and incentives they need to put those solutions into practice,” said FAO Deputy Director-General Beth Bechdol

opens in on 17 August. Over two weeks, governments and a wide range of stakeholders will advance action on land restoration, drought resilience, water, rangelands, and food systems. Water Day falls on 25 August.
By 2050, three out of four people worldwide will face drought. Water Day will showcase solutions that improve water retention in landscapes, restore soil and vegetation cover, reduce erosion and dust emissions, enhance drought resilience, and promote sustainable and inclusive land and water governance.
The agenda for 25 August:
- Ministerial Dialogue on accelerating drought resilience
- Drought Risk Investment Facility (DRIF) event
- Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership event and assembly
- Water as a connector: building momentum to UN Water Conference
- From Victoria Falls to Ulaanbaatar (Ramsar and UNCCD connections)
- Scaling Great Green Wall through continental integration
- International Drought Resilience Alliance (IDRA) plenary and the Parliamentarians Forum
Drought does not stay in one place. Rather, it moves simultaneously through food supplies, energy grids, and national economies. Drought affects natural infrastructure. Early warning systems are necessary. Land and water must be managed together. Investing in these systems today means fewer communities will need rescue tomorrow.

Have you joined or completed the online course on Risk and Impact Assessment?
Following the success of the course, we are excited to launch our first Learning Exchange to continue the conversation.
Many participants told us they wanted to learn more about:
📊 Drought impact monitoring and databases
🌍 Community- and citizen-based impact reporting
📣 Impact-based early warning systems
⚠️ Indicators and triggers for anticipatory action
This interactive Learning Exchange will explore these topics through real-world examples, showcasing how drought impact data and reporting networks are being used to strengthen drought monitoring, preparedness, early warning, and decision-making.
📅 8 July 2026
🕒 14:30–15:30 CEST
Whether you've completed the course or are simply interested in drought impact monitoring and early warning, we'd be happy to have you join us.
