🔪 Tips & Tricks Wednesday: Don’t Toss Knives in the Sink

🛑 Tips & Tricks Wednesday!

One thing I absolutely can’t stand is seeing a good knife tossed into a sink full of dishes. 😅

As soon as I’m done using a knife, I wash it, dry it, and put it away. It only takes a minute, and it keeps the edge in great shape.

Throwing a knife in the sink can:
🔹 Chip the edge
🔹 Dull the blade
🔹 Scratch the finish
🔹 And turn washing dishes into an unexpected game of “Guess Where the Sharp Thing Is?” 😳🤣

Nobody wants to reach into a sink full of soapy water and accidentally find the knife by touch. Your fingers will definitely lose that game!

Treat your knives well, and they’ll return the favor every time you’re in the kitchen.

Be honest… who’s guilty of leaving knives in the sink? No judgment… unless you’re trying to keep your Band-Aid collection stocked! 😂

And for anyone wondering… here’s the glow-up! 😎

The video was at the 80-grit stage. This is after taking it all the way to 1500 grit.

Kind of like seeing me before coffee vs. after coffee… just a whole lot sharper. 🤣🔪

After a long week at the regular job, I needed a little sharpening therapy this morning. 😄

I spent some time working on my technique around the curve near the handle (the choil) on boning knives. It may seem like a small area, but it’s one of the trickiest parts to get just right.

This poor knife has been my test subject ever since I started using the Tormek. Let’s just say it’s taught me a lot of “how NOT to sharpen.” 🤣

This morning, everything clicked, and I finally got it where it needed to be. That means no more hand sharpening this area—the Tormek is now producing the results I’ve been working toward.

It’s always satisfying to see the progress and know that every mistake along the way helped make me better. Every blade teaches you something if you’re willing to learn.

Never stop learning. Never stop improving. 🔪💪

🔪 Tips & Tricks Wednesday 🔪

Use the Right Tool for the Cheese! 🧀🤣

Ever tried slicing a block of cheese with the wrong knife and wondered why things went sideways? Cheese can be surprisingly tough on a blade!

🧀 Soft cheeses (Brie, fresh mozzarella) – A cheese knife with holes in the blade helps prevent sticking.

🧀 Semi-hard cheeses (Cheddar, Colby, Pepper Jack) – A sharp chef’s knife or utility knife works great.

🧀 Hard cheeses (Parmesan, aged cheddar, cheddar parmesan blends) – Use a sturdy knife, cheese chisel, or cheese plane designed for the job.

⚠️ One thing I don’t recommend: using a thin, flexible knife to cut hard cheese. When that blade finally breaks through, it can bend the blade, chip the edge, or leave you saying words that aren’t family-friendly. Trust me… I know from experience. 😂

A properly sharpened knife makes cutting cheese easier, safer, and a lot more enjoyable. If your knife is crushing, cracking, or folding the cheese instead of slicing it, it might be time for a touch-up.

Favorite cheese? Give me a good sharp cheddar or cheddar parmesan blend and I’m a happy camper. 🧀😁

🔪 Tips & Tricks Wednesday 🔪

Your kitchen knife isn’t a toolbox!

One of the quickest ways to damage an edge is using a knife for jobs it wasn’t designed to do.

🚫 Opening boxes
🚫 Prying open lids
🚫 Cutting frozen foods
🚫 Cutting on glass, stone, or metal surfaces
🚫 Scraping, scooping, or moving food around the cutting board with the edge

I’ll admit it—I’m guilty of that last one! 🙋‍♂️ I’ve spent years using the blade to scrape, scoop, and move food on the cutting board. I’m human too, but it’s a habit I’m trying to break! 🤣

Using your knife for these tasks can dull the edge, cause chips, or even damage the tip.

A good knife will last for years when used properly and cared for regularly. Save the blade for cutting, and when you need to move food, flip the knife over and use the spine instead.

What’s a bad knife habit you’re guilty of? 😆
