Prairie Winds Nature Farm

Prairie Winds Nature Farm We offer a wholesome farm visitor experience for children and adults including caring for animals, gardening, nature walks, and horseback riding.

Group visits, summer day camps, horseback riding lessons, pony rides, parties. Hi, we are Charlotte and Robert Wolfe. We have been managing 85 acres of former row crop land since 1992. 20 acres is in fenced pastures for rotational grazing, and 65 is in native prairie, wetland, and woods for wildlife and pollinator habitat. We have a small working CSA (subscription vegetable sales), small animals

to visit with, and produce eggs, honey, and fruit. In addition to the trfarm activities we have an active horseback riding program. We are incorporated as a 501(c)3 and welcome participants of all income levels. We can receive tax deductible donations for our scholarship programs . We host visitors and do day camps for kids. We're interested in permaculture and enjoy having interns help out with all of our projects. Our farm is located in Lakeville, Indiana 7 miles south of South Bend. A working educational farm, we offer visitor experiences and farm products in a relaxed, family environment. We offer a chance for visitors to reconnect with nature and the sources of our food.

So glad to host RMHS here for their ecology segment & various camping overnites 😍😍

We're so proud of these two RMHS students, who have just been accepted into the Reynolds Young Writers Workshop at Denison University! This summer program is incredibly selective; only 50 students from all over the world are chosen for this summer intensive that gives rising juniors and seniors a chance to hone their writing. 🎉📖✍

The program includes 10 days of rigorous workshops, close mentorship with tenured professors and published authors, and the opportunity to have their own work published in an anthology at the end of the experience.

RMHS has been well represented in the young writers community, as two formers students have also been invited to participate in this program. Our Creative Writing elective prepares our young writers to enter academic spaces like this by experimenting with a variety of genres and styles, workshopping with peers, and regularly holding discussions on more advanced texts compared to our English Literature course.

We're incredibly excited for the connections our students will build during this program, and we can't wait to see what they create this summer!

Leave your children alone: Millennial Americans are spending far too much time with their children.

Leave them alone! They do not need your millennial-addled mind around for all those hours. What are you even talking about? The story of the first time you had rosemary in a cocktail? It wasn’t good the first 10 times you told it. Go outside! Let those kids bumble around in private. . . they still see you in the crack of the door. Nice try, crawling into the air vent. Fine, you can sit in your car in the driveway if you must.

I was eating breakfast today and looked out the window at the fresh snow and was surprised to see a female pileated woodpecker on the suet feeder. By the time I got my phone out to take a picture it was gone. We rarely see them at the feeder so it was a real treat. After plowing the driveway, I came in to eat lunch and what do I see? A pair of pileated woodpeckers at the feeder. I cautiously slid my phone to Charlotte (she was closer) and she snapped some quick pics before they flew off. My, what impressive birds.

They are the largest woodpecker in North America and the third largest in the world. The Ivory Billed Woodpecker was larger but unfortunately went extinct sometime in the 1900’s in the southern US. They are principally insect eaters but will also feed on fruits and nuts. They are important in our forests because they excavate cavities in trees for nesting. They only use a nesting cavity for one season so it becomes available for use by many other wildlife species. In our woods you can hear them excavating trees for dens and looking for insects. It is not hard to see which trees they are working due to all the woodchips. They will also “drum” on hollow trees to warn other pileated woodpeckers that this habitat is taken.
