RE: Jeffco Fairgrounds possible Closure:
On Tuesday, January 21, 2020, there will be a meeting in the Green Mountain Room, Jeffco Fairgrounds starting at 7:00PM. The County Manager and staff will be addressing the Fairgrounds Advisory Board about the future of the Fairgrounds. Since Proposition CC did not pass in 2019, all Jeffco Facilities have been under pressure to cut their budgets; and the County Manager is looking at the Fairgrounds as a place to make major cuts. The presentation is intended to be educational and informative, but as related to the Fairgrounds and meeting the budget, under consideration are: (1) maintaining the status quo, (2) ending the Fair (already done I do believe), (3) moving the Fairgrounds (as anyone who has moved recently knows, that is not a cheap thing to do), or (4) closing the Fairgrounds.
These are some things being looked at, and nothing is in stone yet. However, the County Manager plans to give his recommendations to the Board of Commissioners at their Tuesday, February 4, 2020, meeting. Not much time is planned for community involvement in this decision-making process.
In the words of a member of the Jefferson County Horse Council: “If we lose the Fairgrounds, there will be no place for us to do horse events in the area.” In the words of a retired 4-H volunteer and mom: “If the Fairgrounds are lost, youth educational programs including 4-H, High School Rodeo and Westernaires will either lose a central and safe location to learn, or will be so adversely effected that these historic county programs will cease to exist.”
First, it was letting inmates out early from the jail. Now, Jefferson County may be considering another cost-saving measure to deal with budget issues.
