Courtney Fromm News and the crew from FOX31 KDVR.com came out to the farm today to run a piece about the drought and how it’s affecting local agriculture. Of course Whiskey stole the spotlight as he always does, but we’re thankful that the news and our community are taking note of how difficult it is to grow food this season.
With an extremely dry winter, a 100 year drought and everyone feeling the effects of a changing climate, growing food in this high plains desert has never been more challenging. We’ve already lost close to 20% of the crops we’ve put in the fields and had to drastically change our seasons overall crop plan. Pests that usually are not an issue have been devouring crops and w**d pressure has never been stronger. Because there was such a lack of moisture over the winter months our fields are extremely hydrophobic and it’s difficult to get the land to retain water.
We are doing what we can using wool pellets, shade cloths, drip irrigation and appropriate soil management techniques but the fact remains that the struggle is real this year.
If ever there were a time to get out and support local agriculture and food producers in your area this is it. Fruit farms have been hit hard and veggie producers are struggling. To keep this type of life in your communities and in Colorado in general, you need to go support growers. Go to farmers markets and join CSA programs. Don’t gripe about the price of product that so much work has been put into so that you can enjoy great food. Support your local growers as best you can this and every year. We all need to eat.
As always, our market will be open this Saturday from 10-2 and we will have some great products available to nourish your bodies and souls while exciting your pallets. We hope to see yall there.
